Sanpete sees sharp rise in single family dwellings MANTI-- Sanpete County is among several places being impacted by the current trend to and commute move country-war- d to the congested city, according to statistics obtained from Dale Nicholls, county building inspector. "We still have three more months in 1995, and yet weve issued 36 more permits for dwellings so far this year than we issued in 1994," said Sandy NeiJ, building inspectors office. The growth is largely due to commuters to St. George, Salt Lake and Provo who want to live in the rural environments common to Sanpete. Subdivisions like Skyline Mountain, Fairview Lakes and others top the list at 43, up from 27 last year, with county permits at 26, down from 37 last year. Mt. Pleasant has more than doubled in the amount of dwelling permits issued with 27 (13 last year) and leads the 13 cities by that margin as well. Ephraim issued 13, down one from last year and Manti issued 12(11 last year). Centerfield had 10, six more than last year and Moroni had eight, having totalled only three in 1994. Gunnison and Spring City each issued six. Gunnison had seven last year, while Spring City only had three. Fairview remained at five for both years and Fountain Green issued five, down two from last year. Mayfield has issued four, up from a single dwelling last year while Fayette, Sterling, and Wales issued only one each, which is still up from 1994 as none of the three issued any permits last year. Total commercial building permits tallied up at 47 so far this year, compared to 36 in 1994. Most of these are in incorporated cities (34). Commercial permits in unincorporated areas total 10 compared to three in 1994. Ephraim has issued the most commercial permits (15) up from nine last year. Gunnison is next with seven (same as last year) and Mt. Pleasant has issued five, down one from 1994. In a recent Tribune article, staff writer Tony Semerad listed Gunnison as the fastest growing city in Sanpete, with a 40 percent or higher population rate change from 1990 to 1994. Fairview and Fountain Green were listed in the 30 to 39 percent higher category and Sterling was 20 to 29 percent higher. Semerad says only six of the 45 g cities have populations above 10,000. He quoted Brad Barber, deputy director of Governor Mike Leavitts office as saying that it is clear that problems of water, roads and preserving green spaces can only be meaningfully addressed on a state level. fastest-growin- wants vote on leeway tax MT. PLEASAN- T- The Norm Sanpete School Board recently authorized a Voted Leeway Election within the district to take place in conjunction with the Nov. 7 general election. According to a press release issued ' by the district the proposed voted leeway will only involve a shift in the district levies, not a tax increase, according to Superintendent Dennis Mower. Because valuations property within the district are substantially lower than the states average, this shift in levies will create additional funds for the district through the State Minimum Voted Leeway Guarantee. The state guarantee will generate an additional $120,000 annually for the district. Mower said. The board intends to update district media centers and provide for additional educational materials and equipment including textbooks, computers and software with the added funds.
