PLEASANT, UTAH 84647 Volume 103 - June 7, 1995 ASSN Number Twenty-thre- e Snow College graduates 510 students by Dean ODriscoll EPHRAIM Students and citizens living in the backyard of Snow College will play a major role in the 1995 commencement proceedings to be held Friday and Saturday, June Baccalaureate will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday night and commencement will begin at 10 a. m. on Saturdav in the activity center. The estimated 510 graduates will see Karen Barton, Manti, speak at Baccalaureate on Friday night. Saturday they will witness the bestowing of honorary doctorate degrees on Wilbur and Jane Braithewaite, also of Manti, and to Enid Adams, of Ephraim. 0. Deanna Ericksen This will be the 107th commencement for the state-ru- n school. It may also mark the first time that the entire program, will be presented exclusively by students. No outside speakers have been invited to address graduates. Valedictorian Julia Filipova,. from Bulgaria, will speak at commencement, joined by fellow student Allan Barlow, from Montezuma Creek, UT. Dean O Driscoll, chairman of the commencement committee said, "We believe that since the students are the ones who put in all of the hard work to reach this point in their lives that they two-ye- ar should be the ones who the spotlight should shine on for this important day. The students on the committee liked the idea so we are going to try it." Student musical groups on campus will provide all of the music during the two days. Catherine Webb and Janae Olsen will be honored at Baccalaureate, as recipients of the Outstanding Student Citizenship awards. Friday night Misty Nixon will share the stage with Karen Barton as since they had identical grade point averages. Barton is a native of Manti, the daughter of Donald and Barbara Sue Barton. The sixth of seven Ericksen resigns from Moroni Council MORONI Councilwoman Deanna Ericksen announced her resignation from the Moroni City Council in a news release Monday. She also presented a letter of resignation to Mayor David Crosland May 24. The council is expected to act on the letter at its June 17 meeting. Ericksens term expires Dec. 31, 1995. Since her term is still active the council should appoint a registered voter in the municipality to fill the vacancy until the next municipal election, according to Carr Printing. Candidates for the council position, including Ericksens appointed interim replacement, may file by, Aug. 22. Ericksen stated that her reason for resignation was a recent which diagnosis with is aggravated "emotional by upsets". In addition she said she "refuses to be humiliated again in front of her fellow council-persoand citizens". coli-cystiti- According to the press release, she said she thinks its unfortunate that Mayor David Crosland feels he needs to do this and believes she must pose a threat to him. "I have been admonished on many issues in which I have taken the initiative," she added. She feels she was a good, hardworking councilperson with the citizens of Moroni and their needs constantly on her mind. Kellie Fore, daughter of Paul and Rebecca Fore, was named first attendant, and Heather Black, daughter of Michael and Paulette Black, was named second attendant. Contestants attended a dinner hosted by Miss Ephraim 1994, Tiffany Anderson, and her mother, Margie Anderson. Saturday, contestants competed in swimsuit and interview segments. That evening, the hometown crowd was treated to the talent, evening wear and impromptu interview portions of the pageant. One of the evenings highlights came as the girls danced in a wild west production. The pageants heritage crown was shown and worn for the first time this year. Miss Pierro played a piano solo entitled "Jessicas Theme" for her talent while scenes from "Man From Snowy River" were shone in the background. She will be a senior at Manti High School this fall. Her goals for the future include obtaining a license in cosmetology to support her as she pursues a degree in physical education. She is involved in softball, track and cheerleading. She works in her mothers craft business and enjoys mountain biking, with plans to compete in summer races in Moab and St. George. She has maintained a 3.7 GPA in high school, coached for gymnastics for two years. M- . Laura Finlinson, left, was recently crowned Miss Moroni 1995. Elizabeth (Addie) Dyches, right, was named Art attendant, and Tamera Christensen (not pictured) is second attendant. Miss Christensen was not able to participate during the pageant due to an accident the night before competition, but will still be part of the court. All-Arou- nd works at Alvey Lumber. She has studied piano for 11 years and gymnastics for 13 years. First attendant Kellie Fore performed a dramatic monoact "Hamlet" from Shakespeares entitled "Ophelia". Miss Fore just graduated from Manti High School and will attend Snow College on a speech scholarship. She has already been accepted as a Snow speech team member. She plans to pursue a degree in public affairs. Her interests include reading, writing prose and poetry, watching old musicals, volleyball, and currently for Snow College from Assistant Professor Breakwell. She worked in the purchasing office and served as Relief Society president in the Snow College First LDS Ward. She plans to attend BYU to complete her degree in secondary education so she can teach at Manti High.
