Clean Plants Healthy Plants, Healthy House: Houseplants can remove certain pollutants from the air, but the degree to which they do this is still in question. Spider plants appear to be especially effective in removing formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene, which can come from treated wood, furnishings, carpeting, clothing and cleaning chemicals. Apparently the chemical interaction among soil, roots, plants and microorganisms in the soil also make potting soil a good absorber of pollutants. However, it is not known how many plants are needed in any given space and whether they can remove other airborne pollutants.
