SATURDAY-JUL- Y (Free) MUCH, MUCH MORE!! by Kaye Watson SPRING CIT- Y- Area visitors may assume that because there is a monument and spring at First North in Spring City, the towns name comes from that particular spring. True, Indians werent thrilled to yield one of their favorite watering holes to pioneers. Its also true that early pioneers thought only 35 to 40 families' could be supported by waters from nearby mountains. Oak Creek and Canal Creek were made more accessible by joining them to the "Big Ditch" which runs diagonally through town. But in a short time settlers discovered many springs in the area; in fact, as more people arrived and lots were divided, there were springs for just about every home in town. The mountain streams supplied irrigation and other water, while the springs provided culinary supply. The William Blain Spring at First North was only one of many and is really located in the center of Main Street and piped to its current location. Over the years it has provided water for a small baptismal cabin, a cool place to dangle your legs on a hot day, and for many years supplier of the troughs used by local cattle and teams passing through. Because of this availability of pure spring water, a culinary water system was not a high priority in Spring City until the mid-- 1 930 s, when federal monies made a system possible. Delicious mountain spring water was piped direct to homes and most of the city springs were then capped or diverted. Daughters of the Utah Pioneers erected the monument at the First North spring in 1947, centennial year of the Mormon pioneers arriving in Utah Territory. Since then thousands of visitors and townspeople have enjoyed its cool, waters. Unfortunately, installation of gas and sewer lines, six years of drought, and kids who think its cute to block the pipe with small rocks, have interrupted its flow. If you stop for a drink and find the spring not running, call it to the attention of city employees or councilmen. May it continue to quench thirsts for many years. thirst-quenchi- ng MOffJrjjr A Hearty Weston Breakfast! Accommodations, Tent Campmg Indian Lodge e) rental (Te-pe- Local Handmade Crafts |
