HEALTH TIPS Blood Sugar Monitoring Diabetes Home Monitoring: A percentage of patients with diabetes have significant diff erences between the blood glucose concentrations they report with home monitoring and those measured at the clinic. British researchers found that 44 of patients in one study vverd not using their home monitoring correctly, while the stress of a clinic visit apparently raised the levels in the remainder. They recommended working closely with all patients to be sure that they are performing self monitoring correctly BMJ (November -- 14) Dizziness What causes dizziness? There is little consensus on what causes dizziness due, in part, to methodologic problems with many studies. A recent study from Maryland of 100 patients found inner ear problems to be the most common cause of persistent dizziness, occurring in more than half of the patients, followed by psychiatric disorders Interestingly, approximately half of the patients had more than one contributing cause to their dizziness which may be the reason that it often is difficult to pinpoint a cause for the problem Aaaals of Internal Medicine (December!) Vanishing Mormon landscape featured in art exhibit EPHRAIM The works of Bountiful photographer and geographer Gary B. Peterson will be featured at Central Utah Art Center, 86 North Main, now through May 19. The gallery is open every Thursday, Friday; and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. A reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. May 1. There is no admission charge. Farm villages, their landscape setting, native building materials d and people in a lifestyle are themes Peterson pursues in some 60 prints. Geographers of the Mormon West have identified key elements of the old Mormon landscape: irrigation ditches, poplar trees, distinctive church build--, ings, barns, houses and fences, etc. Time takes a toll on the old and traditional. Solid old houses well-love- t fences and bams, weather-wor- n and hay derricks, and other elements of the familiar Mormon settlement in rural Utah have disappeared at an accelerated pace in the last two decades. Peterson has recorded impressions of these familiar landscape elements and their origins periodically since 1970. He has photographed farm villages of LDS pioneers. Peterson explains that settlements underwent rapid change during their early years. Dugouts and log cabins were quickly replaced with solid homes of stone, brick and wood. Towns boomed then stabilized. Eventually the automobile and mass culture caught up with most rural communities and the clearing of unused or structures ensued. Many old values of the build under-appreciat- ed ers may have passed with them, Peterson said. The exhibit is on loan from the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City.
