Show Sanpetes turkey industry sustains economy by Ida Donaldson Moroni Feed Company remains one of the largest employers in Sanpete County, stabilizing the economy and furnishing delectable turkey meat to millions Americans. Turkey is appreciated so much in Utah that Governor Norm 1991 Bangerter proclaimed June as "Turkey Lovers Month." Copies of the proclamation were presented to Joseph C. Nielsen, Ephraim, president of Moroni Feed Company. The proclamation noted that "turkey contributes to a nutritiondiet; the turkey al, economic is a major industry force in Utah; Utah is a major provider of turkey productsfor the nation and several foreign countries." has Turkey consumption increased 126 percent from 1975 to 1991, with per capita confrom 8.5 climbing sumption 19.2 to pounds during pounds that time period. Pounds of turkey meat pro- - of well-balanc- cessed at the Moroni Plant were down from one year ago, according to Moroni Plant Manager David Bailey. The plant processed 71.5 million pounds in 1991 compared to 72 million pounds in 1990. One of the reasons production will be lower is that poultry producers, as well as all areas of agriculture, cannot obtain capital. Without a source of credit, the states turkey and egg industries face sizable cutbacks. Joseph Nielsen indicated that banks are reluctant to lend money to businesses that have a good year, then a bad year. "Theyre good time ers," one turkey grower bankcom- mented. Turkey growers agree that consumption is up because of the variety of turkey available. Years ago, a homemaker had to purchase a whole turkey and sometimes had a difficult time being creative enough to use all of the meat. Today turkey is deboned at the Moroni plant and the raw meat is shopped to the Moroni Feed Company plant in Salina where it is made into turkey steaks, ground turkey, turkey roll, turkey roast, turkey sausage, smoked turkey, cooked and roasted turkey ham and pastrami. Turkey is then shipped to Pace Stores and Price Clubs in Utah and California. Consumers find it easy to prepare and enjoy smaller portions and greater variety. Even before the last turkeys were processed Dec. 17, 200,000 new turkey poults, the first of the 1992 crop, were in the brooder coops. The company hatches its own turkey eggs produced at breeder farms in Washington, Juab, Sevier and Sanpete counties. From breeder farms, the eggs go to the company hatches and then to brooder coops where they are grown by local farmers on feed produced at the companys feed mill.
