Professor Englisheducation Baker and socioip- Roger Dan gyanthropology Witt received awards during a special recognition ceremony in Provo last week. The two were among 30 cor$- munity college teachers recognized by the Utah Council of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) for excellence and dedici-- l tion to their profession. Olsen, a senior at North Sanpete High School, and son of Steve and Candy Olsen of Fountain Green, received a $200 scholarship to Snow College and a plaque from Lynn Schiffman, president-elec- t and chairman of the Ephraim Rotary Community Services Committee. Olsen was one of two "achievers" honored by the Ephraim Rotary Club April 27. MORONI Ed Dickinson his 80th birthf celebrated recently day at a party given in his honor by his children. He was born in Richfield April 27, 1912, to Otis and Hannah Dickinson. Due to the death of his mother and a twin brother shortly after his birth, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, j He moved to Sanpete County and married Theresa Hansen, They celebrated their golden anniversary June 9, 1991. He has five children, Jean Rhineer, Provo; Ellis Dickinson, West Valley City; Sheila Krebs, Provo; Carolyn Jensen, Ely, Nv., and Cathy Crane, Blackfoot, Id.; 24 grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren with three more expected this summer. Rob Bishop of the Utah House of Representatives made the presentations during a dinner at the Excelsior Hotel. Baker has been working at Snow College since 1974. He will ;be traveling to Poland this mer n connection with the Ful- Seminars Abroad bright-Hay- s Program. The program provides shortterm study travel opportunities abroad for qualified U.S. educators in social sciences, the humanities and the social studies to improve their understanding and - knowledge of the people and culture of another country. Baker is one of only 16 participants nationwide to make this trek to Poland. Witt is closing in on 30 years at Snow. He started teaching in September of 1963. Over the years he has served as the Faculty Association President. He also offers some unique y opportunities for students. His sociology and anthropology classes are open entry and open exit classes. That means students can take the courses for varying credit hours depending on how much time they want to put in. Students can begin or finish his classes at different times during the quarter. t "We dont know exactly who nominated us for these awards," Baker said. "It could be the president or someone in the faculty senate. Its a nice award, regardless of how we were nominated." sum-Profess- or . s , ' Dan Witt Roger Baker enroute to tournament Lady Badgers ODriscoll by Dean The Lady Badgers softball team earned their fourth straight trip to the NJCAA National Championships by winning the Region 18 Womens Softball Tournament in Provo this past weekend. EPHRAI- M- After splitting 16 games with Utah Valley during the regular season, the girls stepped up when it counted and beat UVCC twice Ed Dickinson during the tournament to bring home the championship and the trip to the world series. The Badgers went undefeated n in the tournament. The girls beat UVCC 3 Saturday afternoon by smashing four Wolverine pitchers with 13 hits. Snow beat UVCC 7-- 4 in the semi-finaon Friday after knockoff Colorado Northwestern ing 12-- 2 in the opening game. The wins improved the Bad gers record to 26-1- in 0 27-1- 5 overall and junior college competi- tion. Shand, a senior at Manti High School, has served as student body vice president, student body secretary, JV cheerleader and head cheerleader, and as both softball and tennis team captain. She has participated in Utah Governors Honors Academy, Utah National Guard Freedom Academy, United States Youth Conference, and was a Close-u- p delegate to Washington DC. She was her schools general scholarship Sterling Scholar with a 3.9 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, yearbook staff, tennis academic team, state softball team, homecoming royalty, FFA Sweetheart and Junior Prom royalty, and FHA most preferred couple She was girls summer league farm team softball coach and has participated in the Big Brother-Bi- g Sister program and Mormon Miracle Pageant. In her church, she has been Mia Maid president and counselor, and Beehive counselor. She also earned the Young Womanhood Recognition. all-sta- te Mark Willey, son of Mrs. Marie Ison of Wales, received his Eagle Scout award May 3. A junior at North Sanpete, he enjoys speech and drama and playing basketball. His Eagle Scout project was to sand and paint the picnic tables in the Wales City Park. Grandparents are Newel and Eunice Rees of Wales. t Wanda Stewart attended BYU commencement exercises where her grandson Ross Evan Smith received his bachelor degree from the Colleges Fine Arts School of Music. Bart Olsen Bart Olsen is a senior at North Sanpete High School where he has maintained a 3.47 grade point average. He is involved in journalism, drama, debate, speech, business teams, choir and piano. He has written numerous news articles for The Pyramid and received the Outstanding Journalism Award. His drama accomplishments include: first place at both the Gunnison Invitational and regional level in dramatic monoacting, John Jensen and Dawn Sterner display a handmade quilt that will be auctioned off at the State Child Abuse banquet in Salt Lake City. Proceeds will be used for local prevention of child abuse. The quilt was made by Dawn Sterner of Spring City.
