Show Wilderness plans cause concern RICHFIELD Utah State Director of the Bureau of Land Management James Parker met with representatives of local and state government here last week to discuss a proposed bill that would set aside up to 3.2 million acres of state land as wilderness areas. Among the 50 attending were representatives from congressmen Hansen, Nielsen and Garn as well as a representative from the governors office. The BLM released its draft environmental impact statement on lands which meet the necessary criteria to be designated as wilderness in 1985. There is concern expressed by representatives from Utah county governments, that this preliminary statement is deficient as it relates to economies of designation. County representatives say economic data, which the BLM is required to factor in to environmental the impact 'statement is lfails to take deficient, and in the economic ? impact of designating glands from multiple-us- e these to wilderness areas. Many of these water-savin- g techniques were developed at Utah State University and the Utah Water Research Laboratory in Logan, he said. "For years, USU scientists have worked on methods to aid farmers in the Middle East and other countries of the world, where they have little rainfall, effectively water their crops and produce their own food," Ashby said. As people reflect on Earth Day, Ashby said Utahs farmers and ranchers want the citizens of the state to understand they are concerned about protecting the environment and are committed to doing everything possible to meeting that goal. "Todays agriculture has undergone continual research, refinement and improvement, to ensure the kinds and quality of foods American consumers demand," Ashby diabetes is not affect many other in the including the body, organs heart.'Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease, along with cigarette smoking, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. SPRING of Dr. George Learning from the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, Ariz. to study the economic impact designating these lands as wilderness would have on the counties. The results of research done by Learning are a cause for concern among county governments. Learning says setting aside 3.2 million acres of land would cost Utah $2.6 billion each year in personal income. This would reduce the states income by 8 percent, and could cost Utah as many as 94,000 jobs. The BLM will release the final environmental impact statement, including public comment, this spring. The Secretary of the Interior will have until October 1991 to make his recommendations to the President, who will have until 1993 to give it to congress for their action. The Utah Association of Counties represents the interest of officials in all Utah counties, and works to enhance county governments. TIPS... HEALTH 1990 NAPA AUTO PARTS Farmers observe Earth Day :by feeding hungry world DELTA Utah farmers and ranchers celebrated Earth Day by producing their crops and tending to their herds and flocks, according to Ken Ashby, president of the Utah Farm Bureau Federation. Ashby, a hay and grain producer, said Utah farmers and ranchers are now in their fields and on the range, working together in a symbiotic relationship with Mother Earth to feed a growing American and world population. "While others tend to the industrial and geopolitical needs of nations, it is the farmers and ranchers of this land who work to feed the world," he said. Ashby said despite claims O' by some to the contrary, agriculture remains committed to k the conservation of the Earths natural resources. "Farmers and ranchers recognized long ago that we need to take care of the resources allotted us, otherwise our tenure in agriculture would be short and the world would go hungry," he said. Ashby said developments in recent years are helping farmers and ranchers to be more productive, while remaining conscious of the need to prof. tect the air water and soil. The introduction of conservation tillage has shown farmers the way to prevent soil erosion from wind and water, reduce the amounts of fossil fuels required in preparing the soil and planting, and to reduce the use of expensive chemical fertilizers while enjoying the same or greater crop production, he said.
