May 15, with instructions to the citizens that they have their trash on the sides of the streets by that day. City crews will start picking up the trash early Saturday morning, May 16. If anyone has large items to be picked up, special arrangements will need to be made through the city office. Because Mayor Gerald Hansen is having difficulty getting anyone to as the assignment accept beautification committee chairman, the city council gave him permission to organize the committee without ha ing to receive prior approval of names In citizen's petitions. Branch and Iven Cox asked about the possibility of a parcel of property across the street north of the telephone company. The matter will be studied further before a decision is made. Roll Dean expressed concern about an unsightly parcel of ground along the canyon road, and was informed that the county is in the process of taking legal action in the matter The council also discussed the request by Reed Cheney to purchase the section of street extending one block west of Second West on First South They decided that it is not in the best interest of the city to sell it at this time. A motion was passed for the city to terminate its contract with the State for a HUD Community Development Block Grant, because the council felt the time and work involved getting the project approved was too extensive for the amount of funds applied for. A motion was passed to give a $50 donation to the Mental Health Department to sponsor a graduation party for the North Sanpete High School seniors. Kent Miner gave the council a financial update of the city for the month of March. Kim Peterson will be retained as the city auditor for the fiscal year 1988. In other matters. Mayor Hansen expressed appreciation to the Utah Department of Transportation and the city employees for cleaning Main Street. He reported that the county commissioners had committed to repair the cemetery road this summer. He also reported that the ground work lor having the Mountainville site considered for the satellite prison facility has been tinished Councilman Jerry Nelson reported that the cemetery streets running north and south, which have Ixen sold as burial lots, will be blocked off. A few culverts need to be placed at the lower end of the cemetery to drain the water run-ofHe complimented the recreation committee for the progress they are making. Councilman Edwin Miner expressed concern over problems with dog control and asked that licensing lx enforced. Legion to fly flags PLEASANT- - Since the dedication of Memorial Drive at the MT. city cemetery last Veterans Day by the American Legion, an addition 17 more flags have been added and will be flown on Memorial Day. The American Legion has also arranged for a short program. Poppy girls will also be selling poppies that day. Others expected to speak include studentbody officers from North Sanpete, Manti and Gunnison High Schools, Wasatch Academy and Snow College. Cheerleaders are also expected to attend. Following the rally a dance will be held. The only admission needed to get into the dance is to wear a red ribbon, Mrs. Sorensen said. The dance is open to all high school age and older. Mrs. Sorensen said the Sanpete Sheriffs Department will be patrolling the event. The red ribbon signifies that you are saying no to drugs, Mrs. Sorensen explained. She urged all members of the community to wear a red ribbon Friday and also to sign the pledge sheets which can be found in many stores throughout the are not asking for money, she said, but your pledge to say no to drugs.
