He added, however, tnat Smith has submitted his resignation which was accepted and that the board is now in the process of filling the position. Superintendent Leon Neilsen said the auditing firm would handle the districts financial affairs until such time as the board hired a new business administrator. Cook said the district would not lose money as people who are in a position to handle money are covered by bonds and that Smith was covered. Sanpetes mayors, commissioners discuss pulling out of CUP The Sanpete MANTI Mayors and Commissioners held their monthly meeting recently in Manti at the Manti House Inn with Mayor May Peterson hosting. The meeting was conducted by Mayor Gerald Hansen, vice president, of the 'association. r , Jt was noted that Sanpete County did not have a display at the Utah State Fair and Commissioner Newton Donaldson reported the display had been assigned but had failed to materialize. Discussion followed about Pleasant Mayor Amoir Deuel, Dixie Brunger, Karen Hansen, and members of the Mt. Pleasant Ml. Youth Council accepted two awards at the Community Progress Banquet. They received the state award and $400 for the category of Planning and Initiating and the Youth City Council award of $100. Presenting the awards to ail was Lt. Governor Val Oveson. Manti also won $100 for Youth City Council, but no one attended the banquet from Manti. solutions and possible involvement by local people since payment has been made for preparing the display. Mr. and Mrs. Rolf Dean, of Fairview, requested a meeting with the association to discuss plans for development of the county landfill. His company, Fairview Sanitation, would like to provide municipal service. Commissioner Donaldson stated that efforts are still being made to locate suitable land. After this is accomplished, he said, a committee will be formed to make operating decisions, assessments, etc. There will be a coalition of cities formed for this purpose. Mayor May Peterson of Manti stated that the Manti City Council had made several recommendations with regard to economic development. They included hiring a person on a countywide basis to pursue this full time. The group suggested that the County withdraw from the Central Utah Project which costs about $100,000 per year and put that money into an economic development fund which could help start new business. Investigation should be made into spinoff products from the turkey plant in Moroni such as frozen barbequed turkey entrees, premarinated white meat, etc. Mayor Peterson also reported that the Warm Creek Ranch has just opened a gun club for the area and the report is that many memberships have been sold. Commissioner Donaldson replied that it is probably too late to withdraw from the Central Utah Project but that Sanpete County does not derive benefit from this project except for a small value to Gunnison Sanpete to receive $368,805 from BLM MT. PLEASANT Sanpete County will receive $368,805 from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as their fiscal year 1986 share of the Payments in Lieu of Taxes program. According to Jack M. Reed, BLM representative, the total given to all counties in Utah is $9,115,006. Payments totaling $99,473,874 have been transmitted to 1,917 local government units across the country in accordance with the Payments in Grinstaff accepted awards at the Community Progress Lieu of Taxes Act of 1976. Since the payments began, more than on billion dollars has been paid to local governments under the program. Moroni, Mt. Pleasant, Ephraim and Manti were among the twenty-siUtah cities and towns to receive SALT LAKE x awards. Moroni City was represented by Mayor Danny Dyches and Ida O. Donaldson who accepted three awards in behalf of the volunteer and City Council efforts in Moroni. Moroni was one of four communities in the state who received the Governors Award for Volun-teerisin Education. Moroni was also awarded 1st Place in the state and $300 for Most Overall Progress. Coun-cilwom- m Moroni received the third award and $100 for their Youth City Council. Mt. Pleasant was represented at the banquet by Mayor Amoir Deuel LaRue Seely, and members of the Youth City Council. Mt. Pleasant received the State Award and $400 in the category of Planning and Initiating and also $100 and a certificate for their Youth City Council. Ephraim City was represented by Mayor Robert Warnick, Coun- - Flu shots MT. Donaldson has spent much time in this effort and it is difficult to meet the State Board of Health requirements and find a location agreeable with other land owners. Men to face theft charges LAS VEGAS Two men were arrested and jailed Oct. 5 and are awaiting extradition to Sanpete County for alleged auto theft charges. According to Sanpete Sheriffs Deputy Wallace Buchanan, Larry A. Shelmerdine, 20, and Kelly J. addresses 19, Breithenstein, unknown, were arrested for the alleged Sept. 28 theft of a 71 Chevrolet pickup. The pickup, belonging to Donald Olson, Mt. Pleasant, reportedly taken from Olsons residence in Fiddlers Green, was recovered in Mesquite, Nevada. News scene Family injured when vehicle overturns FAIRVIEW- - An American Fork man and his family escaped serious injury when their compact car overturned about eight miles north of here Oct. 5. David Smith, his wife, Sandra, and three children, eight- - and son, were treated and released from daughters, and Sanpete Valley Hospital for scrapes and bruises after the 8:40 p.m. incident. Smith had been driving the vehicle northbound and was near Mile Post 259 when he apparently swerved to avoid hitting a deer on the highway and lost control of the compact car. The vehicle reportedly hit a culvert and vaulted through the air a short distance before coming to rest on its top, according to investigating officer UHP Trooper David Bailey. Trooper Bailey said all the cars occupants were wearing seat belts which probably prevented serious injury. The vehicle, valued at $2,000, was a total loss four-year-o- |
