According to Roy Ellefsen, director of the concert band, the ratings make this years award even possible. Im not aware of our band ever receiving that high a rating before, he said. Ellefsen attributes the band's success to a number of factors including the fact that the administration and school board have been very supportive as has Principal James Thornton. He also said that the band's achievements rest squarely on the high quality of the North Sanpete Middle School program which is directed by Steven Rosenlund. We also have strong support from the community, Ellefsen said. "Parents in Sanpete County encourage their children to take band, and they also encourage them to stick with it. Ellefsen explained that the team teaching approach has proven successful. He said freshmen are registered with Christensen and the upper classmen with himself. We are able to rehearse individual sections without sacrificing band rehearsal time, he said. Christensen and I have divided up responsibilities for efficiency. I chair the music department and do the concert band. He has the Pep Band and the marching program. He added that Christensen puts in many hours of individual instruction in preparation for the small groups contest (in which North Sanpete High School also took a first place trophy this year.)
