Show Home ceremony will join local couple Noritas Nook Take time for one more picnic By Norita Lancaster 462-28- MT. PLEASANT- Labor Day usually means the last d picnic of the summer. Schools are once again, or soon will be, in session, but before vacations are completely over and everyone settles down to the routine of the cooler months, we find ourselves packing the picnic basket, grabbing the fishing pole, loading the kids in the car and racing to the mountains or lakes for one more family outing. No matter how well you plan, occasionally there are a few mishaps that occur, like uninvited ants carrying off half a cake, flies taking the other half and the mosquitos choosing you for their dessert. Forgetting the salt, pepper or a can opener can be a problem too. Even a sudden rainstorm can add to the frustration or hilarity of a picnic, depending on your personal - fun-fille- attitude. These things are minor problems and are usually laughed about later. With a sincere vow of being better prepared and more careful next time. One can eliminate the ants and flies with a good, but safe bug spray. A good mosquito repellant will keep the other pests away. Keep a good first aid kit handy too. I dont have a solution for forgetfulness, but you can be sure to have salt and pepper and a can opener in your picnic basket. Disposable salt and pepper shakers can be made by filling paper straws with the needed salt and pepper, then twisting the ends to close them. Incidentally, an ideal picnic basket be made from an unused, topopening bread box. It can easily be kept clean and will store your picnic supplies, dust-freMake sure you take plenty of water with you. Freezing water in plastic containers (milk bottles), can serve a dual purpose. It will help keep your cold foods, cold, yet when thawed, furnish you with fresh water for drinking or cooking. Butter or margarine can be kept nicely in a jelly jar with a screw-o- n lid. If it should melt, no oily spills will result. An easy way to carry cupcakes to a picnic is in an empty foil or waxed-pape- r box. They wont get jostled around. This is also a good way to take them to bake sales. Keeping hands clean on an outdoor outing can sometimes be a problem. Try a little dab or a couple of drops of inexpensive shampoo in the hands, rub hands together and rinse with water. It's easier to carry a tube or plastic bottle of shampoo with you than a wet soggy bar of soap. Be sure and keep several clean old towels with your picnic supplies, they have a multitude of uses. e. One more thought: If you have small children, give each one a whistle to carry; the noise may drive you nuts, but youll know where your children are, thus preventing them from getting lost. Hope you will find these ideas useful. Have a safe and happy picnic. This weeks featured cook is Barbara Larsen of Mt. A helpful hint: An easy method for lining muffin tins with pie dough is to place a small amount of dough in each cup and mold it to fit, instead of rolling the dough and cutting it.
