The surprise team of 1986 has definitely appeared in Clearfield as the Falcons came up with their second upset of the season, a 22-1- 4 victory over Layton in front of the Lancers homecoming crowd. Perhaps when Davis Highs 1986 season is history and folks look back on key incidents that made or broke them, much attention will zero in on the four or five days that followed the 10-- 9 loss to Clearfield. It was during that span that the Darts got serious about what they 3-- 2. 4-- 1. Clearfield quarterback, Tim Gardner, having perhaps the game of his life, summed up his feelings after the win. We just sucked it up at halftime, said Gardner in reference to 2-- 0. Davis manhandled the Braves defense, gaining 368 total yards to 193 for the Braves. 33-- 0. This Friday the Darts come home to face Viewmont who came up with an impressive win over East last week. In Bountiful last Friday evening, the Darts left a few hearts fluttering as they fumbled in three of their first four possessions, one immediately resulting in an early Bountiful touchdown. Davis took the opening kickoff and despite going nowhere on their first few plays, were given a new chance when a Bountiful defender interferred with the Davis punter. Quickly Rob Warden and Curtis Stoddard went to work with 22 yards gained in just three plays. But just as quickly as the lively drive started, it ended. As Warden pushed forward for an extra yard on his next carry. Bountifuls Chad Rigby ripped the ball from his arms and rambled 59 yards for the games first score. The PAT proved unsuccessful and Bountiful (1-- led 6--0. Well, lets This time the Darts started on their own 30 yard line and with Reed Secrist, Warden, Stoddard, Sam Gardiner and Clint Allen all contributing in one fashion or another, Davis marched down to the Bountiful 23 yard line before another fumble killed that drive. The Braves quickly went to senior fullback Sid Smith who rambled for 30 of his game total 59 yards. But thats when the hit of the game came, the one that turned things around for Davis, Sean Smith, a junior, found a seam in the Brave offensive line and shot like a dart from his linebacker position to nail Bountifuls Joe Covey had, causing him to fumble. Brandon Dyer was there to recover for Davis on Bountifuls 35 yard line. The only score of the first half Karl Wilson, another Clearfield came from Gardner to Tom Price assistant, stated, It was critical on a scoring strike, with that we come out the second half just a second left in the first quarter. Bracken Larsens PAT was good and Clearfield led 0 going into halftime. As the second half got underway, there was a feeling of tension and excitement in the air. On one 67-ya- 5-- 1. ready. And what can you say about Tim Gardner? The guy came through time after time for us. He and the receivers did a tremendous job. Brent Hancock, perhaps a little more low-keye- this season, d stated, You can beat people with defense and it doesnt hurt to put the pressure on with a little offense, something we finally got tonight. Our defense came through again, theyve played like this all year long. In the Layton locker room afterwards, Joe Wood summed up his feelings by saying, My feelings before the game were right. I knew if we didnt get the ball in the end zone a couple times early, then Clearfield would establish themselves along the line of scrimmage and make things tough for us. But we did move the ball. We just didnt get the scores in critical situations. Give Clearfield the credit though. They played good physical football at the line of scrimmage. We got beat by a good football team, though our kids respect everyone in this region. hand, Layton wanted to comeback and prove they were the team people were saying they were. But on the other, Clearfield had their minds too much clouded with thoughts of upset and victory. The Falcons wasted little time in getting after it, too. Joh'n Walters 9 returned the second half line, yards to Clearfields moments later Gardner was connecting with Larsen ona A costly penalty moved pick-uClearfield back to their own 30 a few plays later, but Gardner erne up with another trick by hitting Larsen again for 14 yards. All in all, Clearfield eventually settled for a 30 yard field goal from Bill Spangenthal to give them a 0 lead. After not being intercepted all season long, Laytons Troy Murray gave up an interception in Laytons next possession. And as soon as things got back to normal after a brief altercation, the Falcons shocked Layton as Gardner lofted a scoring strike to Larsen, a pass which Larsen made a beautiful diving stab at. The PAT was blocked and Clearfield held a commanding 0 lead. But still it appeared as if the Lancers might come back. They started a drive on their own 3 1 yard line and after gambling on two tight fourth and short situations (William Reid converted both), Murray d finally helped Layton on the when he found Carl Darby touchdown pass with on a 1:59 left in the third quarter. Jackson picked up 44 yards in seven carries, and scored a TD to help the Darts to a 17-- 6 victory. Davis-Bountif- ul efforts was a 44 yard field goal from Flood. Defensively Davis stood their ground with the Braves, even though Covey helped to pick up the tempo for Bountiful. The senior quarterback was only 3 for 11 in passing with 36 yards., but he did pick up 94 yards rushing on just 10 carries. Jason Citte made things tough for Covey through the air as the Davis defensive back hustled against Brave receivers all night. Citte did intercept one pass which gives him seven on the year. We try to do a good job coaching in the area of not allowing our kids to get down after making mistakes, said Jim Dickson afterwards. We lost the ball three times early but Im proud of the kids for recovering after each of those Dickson cited his coaching staff for their part in the victory by saying, There are five guys out there figuring out ways to beat the other guy. We all noticed that Bountiful was very d on defense, almost giving us anything we wanted to the outside. So we ran it that way. Our dou- ble teams worked at keeping Bountifuls people inside so we had our runners going time after time at smaller defensive halfbacks. Everyone on offense made a key block on that play that enabled Jackson to wind his way to paydirt. Rodney Floods boot made it 6 for Davis. One play that was definitely a key for the Darts in that drive was a pass from Secrist to Warden for 21 yards, on a third down and 11 situaiton. Warden made a spectacular dive for the catch.
