It appears so far that Buchanan, who assisted Mike Hall's program at Bountiful for a number of years, is just the man to help this fastlearning but still young club get in the driver's seat. SCOTT AITI.EGATE, one of SO THROW 'em all in a hat and it's your pick who might Finally emerge as the champion on Region One courts this winter. Of course a lot of folks are saying Bonneville is the team to beat again g because of tradition and the effects of what last year's state championship did, but you never know. ONE OF the six schools in this region which finished with a winning mark was Stan Buchanan's Layton Lancers who after beating West High last Thursday were smiling with a respectable 4 Buchanan's assistants, com- -- mented, "Coach Buchanan came to Layton with an intense desire to make this area a hot bed of Utah basketball. But he knows it will take time just like he knows this year's club has had to take their long-lastin- time. ') "At first I wondered if his buddy-buddy system would work, but let me tell you, it has. I've got a lot of confidence in him now as I know the kids do. He likes this bunch and they could go a long ways if theyll just listen to him. 5-- t VI MUCH OF Layton's strength Brimhall has been the man they look to most of the time. ... You could say of Layton's preseason that this club beat the teams they were supposed to but had their troubles and then some in getting by clubs w ho are destined to be title someone in this year's chase. DAVIS HIGH'S boys basketball n club used the of 1985-8- 6 to get ready for a highly competitive Region I our slate. It turned out to be a tune-uthat shocked the critics and has Davis High fans in a frenzy. The Darts won all nine of their so called "practice games.' beating some of the best and thrashing the not so fortunate. ALL IN all it's a pretty impressive thing that John Robison has done. The only thing that is odd about the situation, is that the new Davis High coach and his kids arent throwing parties and celebrating their unbeaten record. At another school they might be partying at this very moment, but not at Davis High. WHY? At and weighing in at close to 200 pounds, this guy has done his damage in folks LAYTON like Viewmont. Kearns. Ogden. Woods Cross and West, but had their difficulties with the likes of East, Davis. Bountiful and Highland. But it isn't that the new head coach, Buchanan and his new staff haven't figured out how- to take care of the problem of beating quality teams once war is declared in their region. THIS IS going to be a fairly young Lancer team that takes the floor in '86 and the coaches feel that a lot more patience and a few less turnovers will make or break the season for them. There are four seniors here, but there is also two or three solid juniors as well as some sophomores w ho will be seeing a lot of playing time. Brimhall can put the points in from close range and when he desires to master the rebounding charts, he can. BUT REX can't do it all. He'll need plenty of support from two more seniors in Dusty Perry (6-and Matt Peach ). Dusty saw a lot of action a year ago and Peach is baswhat they call the 'blue-collketball player at Layton. They may be the best passing team in quite some time at Davis and one of the most important factors is that they appear to play well together. "The kids compliment each other brilliantly." said Robison. THE COACH did however have concerns about their defensive skills prior to the last four games and a lot of emphasis was put in that area. In three of the four contests. the Darts held their opposition to 60 points or under. Powerful Bonneville was held to a season-lon of 41 in the last game. TAYLOR IS another fine product out of the Taylor family of Kaysville. He's a very valuable part of this club and if he stays healthy, will help lead the Darts a long ways. Meier is one of the quickest and one of the sharp shooters on the team. He'll be playing guard with Card who may not score a lot of points, but knows his role on this team better than any. M ILLARD stands at 2 also and is fast developing into lean and mean forward. The first people off the bench WAS said by the coaching "If we turn the ball over, were in trouble. Theres been no question that Brimhall has been the man the Lancers have looked to most of the time in He's capable of getting the job done. But Region One has some sly, smart coaches who know who to shut down a team with one good scorer. Therefore the Lancer,s if theyll spread it around and get some production from more than just ax one, their season could be quite enjoyable. 6-- Davis ladies on the move up - Lady Darts will have to enter No place to go KAYSVILLE but up for the Davis High women's basketball team. league play without the services of Teri Thompson who injured her 6-- another senior. Brad Anderson and a host of juniors in Brad Richins. Jeff Pearson, and Curtis Stoddard. HAS THE Davis squad peaked yet or will they soon? Not according to their coach. "I'm not so concerned about them peaking. It's just one of the characteristics of this club that they mature and they realize what is ahead of them. We're all proud of what we've done but we know how good people like Bountiful and Highland are. We may have beat Layton by 26 but Highland beat them by the same and Bountiful cot them bv 30. WE'RE NOT light years ahead of Bountiful and Highland and if anything, we're behind them because of their size. We'll be playing 7 kids every time we against play those guys. We'll just have to claw and fight for everything we can get." said Robison. "I have a good feeling about the kids," continued Robison. They are an intelligent bunch and before it's over were going to have a lot more fun together." THIS WEEK the boys open their Region Four schedule on the road at Highland High and then come the follow ing week to host Woods Cross. THE ONLY returning starter for the Lady Darts is the talented Nancy Kirkpatrick who is an in good athlete. She made volleyball and now more than ever will be a key to the success of this Davis High basketball team. Nancy can shoot fairly well, can rebound and can pass. Any coach in Region Four would love to have a player like Nancy on the roster. Theresa Cross will also be another important part of this team with her ballhandling skills. She is small in size but makes up for it in quickness. MOVING UP to replace the injured Thompson will be Heather Peel. As a sophomore she lacks the experience Thompson had, but as a sophomore playing on the junior varsity team, she was averaging 20 points per game. Sanduk and Ste CHRISTEN Packard has started at one of the forward sports all along so far. She has her moments of brilliance at times but lacks some experience also. The sad thing about it is, that the pre-seas- WT-S- i wart are hoping for a solid contribution from Peel, especially if this team desires to make it to the state playoffs. Holly Nelson as a senior will man the center spot. She has some good moves and is not easily intimidated. As Coach Sanduk stated, Teri had the ability to hold this team together and even though weve lost her as far as a player, I'm positive with her just being there, it will be a positive influence for everyone." The kids compliment each other Coach Robison brilliantly. THATS THE kind of maturity that exists among the Davis High players, because they all feel the same way. They arc extremely proud to be one of only a handful of Dav is High teams to go undefeated in but on the same hand, theyd also like to be one of the few teams that has won the region title. "We respect the teams within our region. said Coach Robison. "1 believe it's got three or four of the finest basketball teams in the state. Our kids know that. be the best the state.
