Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL MAY 8. 1985 sports PROVO - Ohwiler, Olivas Bomimte The Becathalon Jeff Ohlwiler and Pepo Olivas are two of the best at what they do. OHLWILER, a senior at Davis High and Olivas a junior at Clearfield High, dont break-awa- y for touchdowns on the gridiron and they aren't blessed with pinpoint accuracy from 20 feet out on a basketball court. Pepo does have an interesting background in baseball but it's track and field and specifically the decathalon that the two of these guys are heads and shoulders above their prep peers. THEY PROVED they were in a class of their own last Friday and Saturday at the BYU Invitational as Ohlwiler defended his decathlon championship, beating out none other than Olivas who finished in second place. Ohwiler garnered 6,238 points to Olivas 5,875 which was only a difference of 363 points. IT WAS a spectacular performance put forth by Ohlwiler who laterally limped through some of his events because of the sore ankle he sustained back in January. Even Ohlwiler himself cherished the 1985 victory over the '84 win because of his ability to work the victory over the injured ahkle. "This means a lot more to me, he said. Ohlwilers only victories in the ten events included wins in both the javelin and the discus. OLIVAS doesnt particulary im- - Carter Finally Beats Law PROVO - With the BYU Invita- tional being treated by some schools as a rest week in track and fields long and grueling trek to the state championship, things get real serious from this point on. THIS WEEK the Davis High Track and Field Invitational gets underway which will include all schools from the ranks, a definite look at how things could be a few weeks down the road at state. But there were a bunch of positive things that took place for the Clearfield Falcons at BYU, a meet where team scores were not kept. If team scores had of been tabulated, Hillcrest would have won the meet with 49 points and Clearfield would have finished second with 45 points. THE ONLY first place performer for the Falcons was Craig Carter in the discus who threw it 164-- 4 and 4-- finally beat Bonnevilles Chad Law. Carter also finished second in the shot put event, second to Law. Carter got a throw of 59-- 1 but Law had an impressive throw of 60 foot even. VAUN WAITE finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 51-Another impressive performance was put forth by the medley relay team of Gerrard Strache, Ron Ruybal, Don Gladfelter and Todd Davis. The mile relay team was a third place finisher. TODD FERGUSON qualified for the state meet with a 12-- 6 jump in the pole vault and Todd Walker finished tied for third in the high jump. Todd Davis set a new school record in the mile run and took fourth place overall. He was second finishers. Todds new among record is 4:26 flat. Todd is gearing up to have a crucial meet for the Falcons at the state meet. press people with an outward personality, a personality he doesnt have. This kid is a that lets his actions speak for themselves. This is the first time ever he competed in a decathalon event and with improvement over the coming year, hes a strong candidate to take the title next year. PEPO LIKES baseball too. During his sophomore season in Wyoming he belted out 12 home runs and 3 grand slams in one season which broke a league record in the Cheyenne area, a record which has existed for seven years prior to that time. He was a pitcher and a centerfielder and batted .637 his sophomore year. mild-manner- red-hea- d AT THE BYU decathalon Olivas felt he performed better in his weaker events than what he did in his strong events. THE TALL, lanky hurdler made shambles of the field again by winning in both the 110 high hurdles (14.73) and also in the 300 IM Hurdles (38.61). I really feel good right now, said Kealamakia, Things are coming together. I know that the state meet is still a month away and I hope I can stay healthy enough to do well there too. COACH RUSS Jones was excited about Terrys emergence as one of the states best. "Outside Clearfields Craig Carter and Bonnevilles Chad Law, there isnt anyone that is dominating their events like Terry is. Im so proud of the guy that I cant stand it. But it isnt over yet and I hope Two-Mile- rs 1 day. His efforts 1 CONFIDENCE-WIS- 1 E lieve it'll help him polished events through the rest of the year." OLIVAS was impressed with Ohlwilers helpful hints, despite the fact the former was hot on his trail. During the mile run, Jeff helped me out by letting me know how to pace myself. I really appreciated that, hes a good guy, said Olivas. It really boiled down to the hurdle races, said Olivas, They hurt my chances of winning. fter eight short years, the team that began this league in last place finds itself at the top of the largest industry in the world.
