The salvos are varied: We need more discipline. get back to the basics. ..teach proper citizenship. ..keep the kids in school. ..make school more meaningful. ..stiffen the -- ..lets standards... I thought I had heard them all-- but now several parents in Layton have added a new twist. These parents are angry at Layton High School for its policy on tardiness. The problem, they say, is that the school is unfair in asking teachers to reduce a students academic grade for exces- sive tardiness. Other theyd still be late. The cruel thing Youre cruel, said the lady. Youve got it wrong I replied. The cruel thing is to make a teacher conduct a class when students are moving in and out of the room at their own speed. Its great spectator sport when hockey players move in and out of the penalty box, but Im not sure its good for education. Some students have good reason to be late, she said. nd if it only happens sometimes, They sometimes their grade shouldnt be seriously affected. But student tardiness is not usually a result of traumatic emergencies. Most tardiness results from the candy and soda pop machines. If you compare the attraction of good old Mr. Chips and a Hershey Bar, the Hershey will win everytime. And it takes time for a young man to pull out his money, buy a candy bar, kiss his girlfriend, offer her a bite of his candy bar, then walk to the soda pop machine, kiss his girlfriend again, then deposit his money, then find another girlfriend... With good weather in the forecast for Bountiful area residents, today (Wednesday) will mark the first annual Day in the Life of American Cities photo contest. Both amateur and professional photographers are eligible for this event during which residents will photograph people and one-da- y do-a- Obviously never tardy You obviously were never tardy, she said. Fertilize your lawn as soon as the snow is melted and the ground is no longer frozen. Ask for a closer locker? Oh thats ridiculous! ! er - Excusable I said. Thats what Machine Gun Kelly said when he mowed down rival mobsters in Chicago. Youre missing the whole point. A young man goes to his locker to get books for his next class. Because of this, he arrives 10 seconds late and gets his grade cut.
