Show The Salt Lake Tribune NATIONThursday,November 23,1995 Rockefeller Republican Now a Dirty Word to Right-Wingers By Carl Weiser '$ SERVICE 'ON — Poor Nelson Rockefeller. The formervice president and New York governor gave his nameto a speciesof politician, the Rockefeller Republican: worldly, fiscally conservative and socially moderate. But with the right wing dominating the Republican Party, Rockefeller Republican now are dirty words After Colin Powell called himself a “Rockefeller Republican,” the right wing respondedwith invective. The American Conservative Union's David Keene said Rockefeller symbolize: es and big government.” chanan said Rockefeller represented ‘‘the Eastern liberal establishment.’’ Conservative Phyllis Schlafly went so far as to call Rocky a “conspicuous adulterer.”” Rockefeller’s own son, Nelson Jr., who did not return several phone calls, now works for the rightward-drifting Boh Dole — the man who knocked Nelson Rockefeller off the GOP ticket in 1976, But wait, there’s more: A new book, Thy Will Be Done — The Conquest of theAmazon: Nelson Rockefeller and Evangelism in Nonstereotypical Indian Teaches Children Old Ways SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER SAN FRANCISCO — Fount Mashburndoesn't looklike an Indian. “People expect long hair and dark skin,” said Mashburn, a 74year-old, part-Cherokee, partOsage, mostly white man who was raised by a full-blooded Osage uncle. Mashburnrecalled talking with school kids about Indian traditions and crafts when a youngster piped up, “ ‘But you can’t be an Indian.’ I asked him why, and he said, ‘Well, you're wearing glasses, and you've got a wristwatch on. Real Indians in the movies never do that,’Mashburn recounted, chuckling Mashburn, whose short, white hair andfair skin don’tfit the stereotypical Indian image, has spent the 20 yearssincehis retirement trying to pass on the “old ways’’ he learned growing up on an Oklahomaranch. He teaches Osage hand weaving, beadwork, leather crafting, dancing, singing and philosophy at a summer day camp for San Francisco area Indian children. Healso instructs adults through an American Indian veterans’ Hevisited his family in Oklahoma regularly before his health madeflying too difficult, but never considered moving back. “T've gotten used to living in town with everything handy,” he said. Mashburn devotes most of his time to teaching children because he worries that Indians who grow up in thecity lose touch with their roots. “They lose the meaning of being an Indian,” hesaid. Muchof the meaning, he said, comesfrom thedetails of ceremonies, crafts and stories he seeks to preserve. “This is a dancer's umbilical cord to the mother Earth,” he said, fingering a brightly colored sash that is meant to hang from a ceremonial dancer’s waist to his ankles. “The patterns and beadwork, they all have a meaning,” he said. “These days, the younger dancers will see a pattern they like and just try to copy it. They don’t understand that could be a family pattern, or someone's personal design.” “The young people want to be group Mashburn left hometo join the Navy in 1938 because “there wasn’t a wholelot for young man to look forward to in the Midwest right after the Depression,” he said. He served in World WarII and the Korean War, married a Concord woman and served at the MareIsland NavalStation until he was 55, the Age of Oil, accuses Rockefeller of helping destroy the Amazon rain forest. Is this the end for Rockefeller Republicans? “Tm a Republican, and I’m a Rockefeller,” said Larry Rockefeller, Nelson’s nephew and an environmental lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council. As for the book, “It sounds pretty absurd,” he said. “It’s the first I've heard ofit. It sounds fairly off the wall.” Larry Rockefeller attributes the reaction to fear by right-wing Republicansthat they really are outnumbered by moderate, Rockefeller-type Republicans. That may have been proved when Powell called himself a Rockefeller Republican — and then ontpolied not just Bob Dole but President Clinton. The truth is that Rockefeller was the patron saint of big government. During his four terms as governor, the numberof state employees increased from 102,000 to 183,000; the state budget more than quadrupled, andthe tax levy went from $94 to $460 for every person in the state, according to his obituary in The New York Times. His legacy includes the giant dominolike buildings that form the state capitol complex in Albany, tighter protections for Adi4 {CABLERATESARE RISING,AGAIN! TIRED OF PAYING FOR CABLE? The details can slip away when children are taught about their culture a few weeks out of the year, instead of living it, Mashburn said. “As time goes by, there will be things that I forget when I teach them,” he said. “Then, when they're teaching children, there that more than double underhis leadership. The heir to the Standard Oil fortune, Rockefeller’s principal homewas his family’s 4,180-acre estate near Tarrytown.
