On record, Carpenter-penned lyries such as those from “The Last Word” will haunt you forever: You can have it. I don’t want it. And when you've gotit, I'll be gone. It won't matter what you're saying when the damage has ail been done. It's tempting to feel sorry for her, lost loves and all. But seeing herin concert shows a whole otherside, if not manyothersides, to this urban-country artist. It is then you realize that there are a thousand morelyrics from where those came. It just depends on her mood. For example, take the lonely housewife in “He Thinks He'll Keep Her.”’ The original lyrics leave her “in the typing pool at minimum wage.” In Sunday's con- cert, Carpenter seemingly spontaneously altered the lyrics to “Now she’s by the swimming pool, sipping lemonade.” Carpenter mixedit up like that all night long. She opened with the spicy “Passionate Kisses,” and then toned it down for “Tender When I Want To Be.” Thenshe paredthe playful “Shut Dear Ann: When our son was Up and Kiss Me” with the heartbreaker “Quittin’ * Time.” But it to” for quite a long time — and I am speechless. deal. “Just nervoustics,” the doca assured me. “He'll outgrow These symptoms and others would come andgo.J almost went crazy trying to protect Joey from anything that might produce stress. While the guys in her band — talented and capable musicians all — where showingoff in stereotypical macho fashion, ripping out familiar guitar licks from The Knack’s “My Sharona” and Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever,” Carpenter brought the house down with a few bars of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” The Mavericks madetheir Utah debut opening for Carpenter. Well, I'll bet had her sun bonnet stolen right off her head while she wassitting in herstroller. My husbandandI were enjoying a few hours on the beach at Coney Island. We were getting ready to leave and gathering up our things. I sat the clder child on a benchso he could get his shoes on. Meanwhile, the baby was strapped in herstroller. Joey was put on medication and has dramatically improved. Ann,I'm writing to you because half the people I've met whose children have Tourette syndrome told me they first became aware of this illness when they read aboutit in your column. You had correctly diagnosed Tourette syndrome from the description of someone’s behavior. You then listed whattypesof things to look for. Please tell parentsagain thatif aboutit. The symptoms were so obvious to methatI felt safe in labeling the problem.
