Interestingly, the biggest com- plaint was state income tax. According to my calculations and experience with California tax, those people are stretching the truth. I must say that if retired, those people must have a good fetirement; to pay $773 for California tax you must have a tax- able income of $23,750. Califor» nia gives senior citizens double exemptions: True, $2,527, multi- on certain foods at the grocery store, but the sales tax is higher. You don’t mention utilities like gas and electricity. As for education, California has the lowest scores in the nation (I know, I was a teacher). Most California students cannot read when they start high school; they are given grades based on good behavior, not knowledge. The majority of the high school students have a 2.0 grade point average, compared to Utah where a secondgrader can read almost fluently. I had two main reasons for leaving California: 1) As a senior citizen and being on Social Security, I was unable to afford Cali- Newspaper misreports Lee’s statement Olympic environmental concerns unnecessary Mrs. Dorothy Lee did not, I repeat did not, use the term “whitey,” as attributed to her in the account of the Ogden Area Community Action meeting of May 21 and as reported in the May 22 edition of the StandardExaminer. She said, and I quote, I love the Olympics. They have a great tradition. The World Almanac says, “The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C.” They have been aroundfor a long, long time. The almanac aiso says, “The modern Olympic games werefirst held in Athens, Greece, in 1896, to promote interest in education and culture, also to foster better international understanding through the universal medium of youth's love of athletics.” “Mr. Gillespie, look at how all the whites voted.” I heard her, and so did Brad Dee, mayor of Washington Terrace. Mayor Dee fornia ~ even in a small community - and 2) not being protected must pay back some of your Social Security anyway. Youall forgot to mention that by police. Now, my question to all of you complainers: If California is so wonderful, why did you come shaft or what? I’m not condoning her affairs; all I'm saying is what is good for the goose is good for compared to Utah’s $7,500. As you are in a certain bracket, you (California has the highest property tax (three times what you pay here in Utah), and the highest car Tegistration and sales tax. True, in California you don’t pay tax to Utah? You can always head back; it’s easy, just take I-80 all the way! A. He picked the pink posey. Gillespie Ogden Did the Air Force give her the the gander. If the Air Force would discharge all male officers who had extramarital relations during their careers, then the officer ranks would be reduced bya larger percentage. As I recall, even Gen. Eisenhower had a paramour. I worked and traveled with Air Force officers for many years. More than oneofthese married, educated gentlemen had no qualms, whatsoever, about having girlfriends on the job or on TDY. The Navy officers’ anniversary ball held in Las Vegas several years ago, where several drunken pilots groped and mauled not-so-innocent women, is a good case in point of the class of morals of male officers whenthey are out of town. Were they prosecuted? Maybe reprimand or two + that wasit. In the Air National Guard main building in Tucson, Ariz., in the mid-80s, was a group picture of the officer fighter squadron for everyonetosee. It is very likely still there. You couldn't see the pilots’ faces, but you could see each officer’s naked posterior as they had all pulled down their . pants, bent over and moonedthe camera! This gives you an idea of the moral character of the officers flying our planes. Sleep well tonight, America! In closing, I say again, it is hypocritical for the Air Force to single out Ms. Flinn. Either enforce the regulation for all, or enforce it for none. Moreover, he who is without sin should cast the first stone. Hundreds of thousands of people in Utah support the Olympics and are excited that we will be able to host people from all over the world. Sorry to say, a comparative few very vocal protesters want to spoil this rare opportunity. Their main concern seems to be with environmental problems. This is difficult to understand. If these protesters would just pay a little heed, they would know that the International Olympic Committee has very strict rules and regulations, especially concerning social and environmental issues. In regard to the cross-country skiing events: It appears the first choice for staging these events is the Wasatch State Park. If, perchance, North Fork Park is chosen, I would hope we in Ogden Valley would strive to fulfill the goals set forth at the beginning of the modern Olympics in 1896. Joseph G.
