Show oP : 28 Sunday, June 30, 1996 * * > . * . * BRIGHAM CITY - Several shooting enthusiasts think they've got a great use for the Box Elder Countylandfill set to be closed this year: It could be, they say, one of the state's best shooting ranges. “All along the entire Wasatch Front, shooting ranges are being closed down,” Gene Sterrer, a memberof the Box Elder Wildlife Federation, told county commissioners last week. “People will pick up impromptu shooting ranges wherever they can and destroy things. We want to cut down on that.” Jack Avery, another Wildlife Federation member, said the old landfill could be a good place for a shooting rangethatis 250 to $00 yards long. There is no controlled range of that length in Box Elder County, or possibly in Northern Utah, said Wildlife Federation member George Ward, so the range could attract shooters from Weber and Cache counties as well as Box Elder. The county has a 100-yard range in Willard and another in Mantua, Sterrersaid. Commission Chairman Lee Allen said a shooting rangeat the old landfill would haveto find a way to coexist with a trap shooting range already there, and with a gravel pit that county employeeswill keep using even after the landfill closes. Andemployeesof the landfill said they did not know where the Wildlife Federation would find 250 to 500 yards of level ground - at the landfillsite. But Allen said the county would work with the Wildlife Federation on the idea. The district also recognizes a second bonus with natural classrooms — they complement the state’s science core curriculum released over the past two years for elementary and secondary schools. The approach is hands-on. Classroom scientists can germinate carrot seeds in wettissue, than grow the plant outdoors, rather than in a disposable cup set on a.shelf near a window with southern exposure. The same class can also go to their school’s center to learn about the natural filtration wetland plants provide.
