Show MX iMRCH sums Weekly Update The final report of the Townes Commission, appointed by Secretary of Defense Weinberger to study alternative basing modes for MX, is .expected immediately. The report will be delivered to the Secretary; it is uncertain when it will be released to the public. When it is, the National Campaign will have available official responses from concerned environmental, taxpayer, arms control and religious organizations. The Campaign also plans to hold a press conference in conjunction with these groups at that time. The FY 82 Department of Defense Authorization Bill is slated for consideration by the House on The measure includes S2.4 billion in funding for the MX program, roughly $1.2 billion of which is targeted for the current Multipe Protective Structure deployment plan in Utah and Nevada. Amendments to delete all or part of the appropriation for the MX are expected from and Simon Reps. Dellums with its present plan for completion of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. or commencement of work on MX projects until it fully complies with its obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act will be filed early next week in the U.S. District Court of Utah. The order is three on requested independent grounds: 1) failure of the USAFs DEIS to provide rationale for the number of missiles to be deployed, to analyze the impact of the probable expansion of the MX system beyond current plans, or to evaluate the effect of a nuclear attack aimed at the deployment area; 2) failure of the USAF to consult or coordinate with state officials, in violation of the NEPA; 3) USAF commitments for work by MX contractors before the completion and full discussion of a Final Environmental Impact Statement, in violation of existing law.
