Our USPS 446740 if Town Published Every Friday at Fillmora, Utah 84631 By Progress Printing Company PUBLISHER & EDITOR Susan B. Dutson FILLMORE by STELLA DAY matter where we go here they grow roses, we can't help but notice how much more beautiful the roses are this year. They are more colorful, more plentiful, and grown on larger bushes. It must be the extra moisture we hac had this spring, which has improved the quality and quantity of the roses. Bushes which have not produced outstanding roses before are just one mass of extra quality roses this year. Have you visited the rose gardens surrounding the Old Capitol Building? If not. make sure you go there right away as the roses are at their best and just breath-takinEach year many new hushes are added, so that there really is not a more beautiful rose disin the play anywhere state than you will find at the Old Capitol Gardens. When my nephew, Dwight Huntsman, took me to see the roses last Max Monday morning. Martin. Andy deHaan. and Golden Brunson were all working diligently, grooming the gardens of ncwlv planted roses as well as the gardens which had been planted for vears. The gardens have never been more beautiful and we should all take time to thank these good workers for the care they give these gardens. Several other towns were granted rose garden when her Fillmore received grant, but the people of the town did not apprewonderful ciate this opportunity to test the new roses, and now they have lost their grant. Taking care of the new bushes as well as the old ones is a difficult job. However. Max Martin has been in charge of this opportunity for many vears now. and has done a very outstanding job. Make sure that you tell him how much we appreciate his excellent work. Some of the newest and most beautiful roses which are hybridized anywhere in the world are sent to Fillmore to be tested to sec how they respond to this climate. No w Margo Barton What an opportunity this gives us in this vicinity, to see these rose bushes in bloom before they are really put on the market. You the when see company produces just enough bushes to supply the test gardens, the bushes are sent to these gardens. It may be two more years before there are enough bushes to put them on the market. We can't afford to buy but just a few of the new rose bushes each year, and by seeing them in bloom before they are on market, we have a chance to select the ones we like best before all of the bushes are sold that first vear. Each of us enjoys having something new w hich is difficult to get. There are many lovely rose gardens in Fillmore. The small rose garden on courthouse the grounds was all cleaned out and in full bloom, the very first roses in Fillmore this year. Thanks to the good work of Lewis Robison, who gives that rose garden such good care. We rode around town trying to see every rose garden in town; however, we may have missed some gardens which are hidden behind the house or by shrubs. Some of the gardens were planted by others and the rose gardens were already on the grounds when the present owner purchased the property. Both Dolorous and Neldon Brunson. also Gene and Lillian McBride, have had rose gardens for years, and they add new bushes to theirs each year. This vear Jack and Edna added McBride have new bushes to their garden. which they just built last year. The Larry Paxtons live in the former home of Eldred and Es- ter Robison and inherited their beautiful rose garden. Most of the bushes were raised from slips, which makes it possible for each of us to have a rose garden, but it takes work and good gardening.
