Show MR. KRUEGER ON TV Traffic MR. KRUEGER ON TV Take a lonely old janitor, played by Jimmy Stewart. Give him an affectionate cat named George. Add a little blonde girl with lost mittens. Then bring on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, roll the cameras, and youve got a Christmas special. Not just another Christmas special, cither. An unusual one, with a moving message that trickles tears down your face. This December, television stations throughout the United States will air Mr. Kruegers Christmas, a new half-hou- r drama starring Stewart. The special will be shown locally at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 1980 on Channel 5. In Mr. Kruegers Christmas Stewart plays a role he says portrays his own beliefs about Jesus Christ. The film also stars the e Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The movie is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. The story is of the lonely Christmas Eve of Willy Krueger, widowed janitor who daydreams of being wealthy, dignified and surrounded by friends. As he drifts to sleep listening to a Tabernacle Choir record, he imagines himself conducting the choir. To film Krueger, Stewart actually conducted the choir in Salt Lake City. And that experience was one of the most wonderful experiences Ive ever had, he says. Ive been a great fan of the Tabernacle Choir for years and years, and to suddenly find myself up there on the platform facing the choir and leading them in a song-i- t's something Ill never forget. The experience was memorable for the choir, too. In fact, after the nonmusician Stewart led them, they spontaneously gave him hearty applause and standing ovation. That response was later added to the "Krueger" screenplay. Perhaps the most moving scene is a daydream sequence in which Krueger finds himself at the birthplace of Jesus. The shepherds, Mary and Joseph cannot see Krueger as he delivers a soliloquy to the infant Jesus: As long as I can remember youve been right by my side, he says haltingly. "I' never forget when you walked with me right in those first few hours after I lost Martha. Ive always been able to count on you when Ive felt dark inside and when I you were right there every time-rig- ht there. Even when I didn't feel good about myself, I knew that you cared for me, and that made me feel better. He adds earnestly, I love you. You've been my closest, my finest friends, and that mean that I can hold my head high wherever I go. Stewart says that while those lines are Krueger talking, they are also Ive always looked Jimmy Stewart. to Jesus Christ for guidance and help, and I always thank him for the blessing that come my way, Stewart says. "So it was quite close to my heart. This is the first time the choir has 350-voic- worked with Stewart. The choir members were happy to find out that the Jimmy Stewart they know on the screen is in real life a warm, real human being, says Choir Director Jerold D. Ottley. The music for Krueger is from the choirs latest Christmas album, White Christmas. The scenes of Stewart directing the choir were shot on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City and in the Wasatch Mountains east of Salt Lake.
