Fire losses during the season are especially heartholiday rending. Most of the residential fires that occur during the holidays are preventable. Lyn Williams, Fire Chief for the Fillmore Fire Department, has some good points for fire safety at Christmas and all winter long. Regarding your Christmas tree, choose a fresh one, keep it watered, and place the tree far from wood heat sources. Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Be careful with Christmas lights with regard to cords, sockets, and extension cords. As for wood stoves, 58" code sheet rock is placed behind the stove with a one inch air space between the wall and the sheet rock. Make sure that the stove is a minimum of 36 inches from any combustible surface. Make sure hearth construction is two or three inches thicks using brick or other masonry material. Your chimney should have no more than two 90 degree elbows. Check your stovepies and chim-nev- s at least twice a month or better yet, once a week. Have a good supply If of fresh air ventiling your home. there isnt enough fresh air, the air needed to burn the wood can cause a partial vacuum effect, forcing burned gas fumes back into your home. These fumes are actually carbon monoxide and can be fatal. It is a good idea to have a smoke detector adjacent to sleeping areas, in the event of a fire. Chief Williams suggests the following plan: 1. Get everyone out of the house. It is a good idea to have a predesigned meeting place. 2. Alert local emergency fire person nel The number is c area, and 743-660- 0 864-277- 7 in the Fill-m- o in the Delta are.c Wait until help comes. Never rea smoking or burning home. If youre involved in a suspected electrical tire, trip the main breaker to the building if not in the main fire .one. t hii-- Williams also recommends at leaM one five pound ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher in ex cry home, placed in convenient location. With these tips in mind, the Fillmore Fire Department wishes everyone a Very Merry Chnstmas and A Happy New Year. 3 enter f .1 Environmental Statement Under MX 'd Shopping Days Left Hair stylist Diane Memmott center poses with actor James Stewait and 6 year old actress Kamee Allesia during break in filming of "Mr. Krueger's Christmas" to be shown on Channel 5 Sunday at 7 p.m. Till Preliminary Review Christmas The Air Force, Energy and Interior Departments, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are now reviewing the preliminary draft environmental impact statement for deploying the MX missile and withdrawing or acquiring land for it. The Air Force has prepared the 1,500 page document with support from its contractor, Henningson, Durham and Richardson, Santa Barbara. CA, at an approximate cost of $17 million. The review began November 12. and will continue into early December. Comments will be incorporated into the statement before publication and release to the public. The preliminary statement discusses the "tiered decision making process used in this part of the MX program. The machine, often called a mechanhole ical mole, bored a through the mountain in 42 days and then was moved across the canyon to begin the Hades Tunnel. "It now has bored about 200 feet of the second tunnel." Bill Plummer, Upper Colorado Regional Director of Water and Power Resources Service announced today. Rhodes Tunnel, the shortest of seven tunnels on the Strawberry Collection System, is being constructed by the Water and Power Resources Service. Three of the seven tunnels arc complete and four are still under construction. The cutting head for the "mole is 1 electrical driven by five revoluf motors at seven and tions per minute. The moles head is equipped with 27 cutting disks which are forced into the rock under hydraulic pressure. As the head revolves, the cutting disks chip out the rocks. The rock chips are picked up in buckets on the moles head and dumped onto a conveyor belt which takes the cuttings on a train car for removal from the tunnel. Under good conditions these moles can cut 00 feet of tunnel per day, however, less than favorable conditions arc often encountered. After the tunnels are cut, the contractor braces the excavation before lining the tunnels with concrete. When complete, these tunnels will convey water to the enlarged Strawberry Reservoir, where it will be stored until needed. one-hal- 1 PAHVANT VALLEY SENIOR CITIZENS SCHEDULE B Ruth 7.mltralch Monday, Dec. 22: Meat loaf. This point was emphasized by Utah Foundation, the private tax research organization, in their latest analysis of rising school enrollments. According to the Foundation study. public school enrollments, which leveled off for a short tunc in the have resumed an upward trend. This fall enrollments climbed by 10.310 over 1979. Utahs growth rate peaked in July 1978 and has been declining ever since, savs R. Thayne Robson, a leading economic forecaster in the state. A few months ago Utahns were being cautioned to prepare for high rales of growth. Robson points out, but now it appears changing economic conditions have reduced growth in Eiah to a very low level. "Instead of dealing with high rates of growth wc will be dealing with very low rates of job opportunities in Utah," he notes.
