Show Millard County LETTERS Junett News EDITOR April has been a really busy month for the Editor As a former resident of Millard County. I was pleased that a recent issue of the Progress reported that most residents opposed the installation of the MX system in their back In your April 4 yards. issue. Senator Frances Farley made the only sensible appraisal of the MX system that I have read and I read widely. The MX system proposes to spend billions on something as worthless as the now abandoned missile system here in North Dakota, which also cost billions and the only time they attempted to fire one (without an atomic head of course) it didnt even get out of the silo. Our immoral leadership, both past and present, have steadfastly refused to sponsor anything of a real deterrent nature, such as the l Bomber and myriad of other technical advantages They have developed. refused to beef up civil defense to match our enemies; according to the retired chief of intelligence, a nuclear war would see the U.S. lose over 100 million with a 5 to 6 million loss by the Russians. A reasonably intact U.S. population would be a much better deterrent than a questionable MX system. When you think about what amounted to a U.S. surrender in Korea and Vietnam, paying a Communist dictator to Panama the acquire Canal, which is very essential to defense, helping Marxists to gain control in Africa. Iran and even is Afghanistan, possible that the is "conspiracy theory a reality, not a theory? Our major news media has not told the public how within very recent years our of Corps Engineers built a nice road through rugged terrain of Afghanistan, which was easily connected to a Russian highway, which was a real boon to Russian invasion forces. Any proposals for the military to play with a new toy, a water project for the Corps of Engineers or the feasibility of buying an ice cream cone to a 5 year old will always receive a positive answer. Senator Farleys statement concerning the increased effectiveness and decreased vulneraof nuclear subbility marines compared to the MX is certainly sound. Also, submarines would not invite massive bombing our back yard. it not g B-- know there are some Millard County residents who favor any federal project regardless of the If the majority future. are against the MX, I hope Washington gets the word STRONGLY. Perhaps a counter proposal is in order for the beneifi of the Easterners who consider the west expendable. There is a fine underground system already in existence that, with a few modification, s would make a fine runway for the MX "shell game". I refer to New York's subway system. Sincerely. George E. Staples I Open Letter As officers in the Millard Band Boosters organization, we would publicly like to express our gratitude to those in our area, and especially to band parents, for their help in raising the money for the new band uniforms.
