Wc can hear part of the world in the news from any part of the world in just a few minutes after it has happened. However, fast travel and instant news do not neeessarily bring happiness. Instead of a world of happiness, we seem to live in a world of fear; no one dares to relax or we will be taken over by terrorists. Wc may be destroyed by an atom bomb in seconds, or wc may be attacked and killed by freaks. We live in fear of developing cancer, or heart trouble. We hear of so many new ailments every time we listen to the news, and we are sure we have the symptoms. We fear soaring prices, food shortages, gas shortages. We arc so used to jumping in our cars and going wherever we choose, that it is real punishment to have to stay home. Life is really complicated and wc wonder when wc will be able to relax and enjoy just everyday living, for after all. it is the everyday happenings which add up to a happy or an unhappy life. Parents should make a real effort to create happiness in the home. The first item on the agenda is to sit down with the older members of the family and figure out just what the family can afford to do and what has to go by the board. It will take really careful planning in order to live within our means and plan for the future. No matter how much or how little we make each month, we w ill have to plan in order to make sure we don't live beyond our means. Young married couples should realize from the beginning, that their credit rating is one of the most important items in ensuring a Linda Wood forty-eigh- Compositor forty-eigh- happy home. Generally money problems are the cause of more than half of the broken marriages. There arc certain basic items which must be met in every home, regardless of the monthly income, and the family must realize that their daily activities must be geared to fit that income. We all agree that the wage earner must have sufficient insurance to provide for the family, should anything happen to him or to her. There arc rent, house payments, or if they own their own home there arc taxes, and upkeep. There arc heat, lighting, water, and telephone bills to be paid each month, then of course one of our most important items is food. Where we used to allow 20 percent of our income for food, we now, because of the inflated prices, have to have around 35 percent of our income for food. This means that we do without some of the more expensive foods like strawberries and melons out of season. It also means that we have a small vegetable garden even if we only have a small yard. We can plant beans, squash and climbing foods along our partition fences to save room. Make sure that we train our children to help w ith the garden. Teach them to identify each plant as it comes through the ground, then later teach them to be able to tell weeds front vegetables or flowers. One good w ay to teach children is to let them have a row or two of vegetables for their very own. It is surprising how proud they become when their carrots or tomatoes are so delicious. Oftentimes emergencies arise and we have to borrow money. If we have been very careful to live within our means and have paid our bills on time, we will have no trouble borrowing from the bank, since banks make their profits by lending money to people who pay their bills no time, making sure of an excellent credit rating. Wc do not need to live in fear if we are busy doing worthwhile projects, especially if we involve our families in these projects. After we have all finished working on some family project, we can have a picnic on the patio or back lawn, or once in a while we can go to the park where we can visit with other picnickers. There is a way to "live happily ever after", but it takes intelligent planning, with both parents and the children honestly participating and cooperating. Happy homes arc not easily obtained nor do they just happen, they are created by members of the family who arc willing to give their best efforts to help make everybody happy. But remembers, "It can be done, and we don't have to be rich to do it. Welcome New Member The Pink Ladies Auxiliary would like to welcome Afton Swartz as a new member of our organization.
