Most prominent is the situation in Davis County, where pressure is being exerted upon the Davis County Library to remove the book, "Americana, from the public library collection. The Utah Library Association is deeply concerned by such initiatives, as they place in jeopardy the treasured American ideal of freedom of access to intellectual information. On 8. 1977, April meeting in convention in Salt Lake City, the membership of the Utah Library Association unanimously passed the follow- Dear Sue and Progress Family: Sorry my subscription is going to be a little late getting there. That sound principle has been the foundation for a success story. Millions of young men and women have studied vocational agriculture and participated in FFA since the beginning. Their agricareers were ignited by the program. That principle of Leam- ing By Doing is still working. The founding ideals and basic concepts of FFA and vo-a- g have never really changed. But there have been new faces, new colors, new ideas, new people, new techniques and a new agriculture. This national organization of students, over 500,000 now as compared to under 30,000 in 1928, is made up of high school students who have an llWI'- - lift future Dear Progress Readers: Perhaps some of you have seen the advertisement in a local publication (not the Progress) in which a greyhound farm says, "We Buy Live Jack Rabbits. Now before you get your kids putting out rabbit traps and making a big business out of this, you should know what the greyhound racers will do with these cute little bunnies (they dont want them because theyre cute). They are usually either strapped to a lure and or used in "coursing released in a fenced enclosure where, pursued by the dogs, they must run for their lives. The rabbits are always killed or mutilated, and if they survive they are just used again until their miserable lives are ended. Kittens are also sometimes used in training dogs. Training practices vary, but it is known that dogs not trained with live lures cannot compete well d against ones. Another thing to consider is the treatment of the dogs themselves, who are shipped all over the place for these races. Also, the breeders of racing dogs may selectively "cull (kill) numerous puppies who are not what they consider good racers. There is a bill before Congress which would prohibit, among other things in connection with this activity, shipment of any live animal to be used as a lure in coursing. So if there are any of you who are bent on helping the racers by greyhound catching rabbits for them, youd better hurry while you still can.
