This question is essentially two fold. First, negative reinforcement is any action, the removal of which is the reward. A few examples of negative reinforcers are spanking, yelling, hitting, verbal abuse, or grounding. The latter, grounding, is a more positive form and does teach some responsibility when carried out; but still falls under the definition. The second part of (he question seems to be, how can anything vi negative be reinforcing or a reward? Children and adults actually work to obtain abusive rewards. This is important since most parents, spouses, or teachers fail to realize this. The premise here is that "it is better than nothing at all." If a child or an adult is only recognized or believes they are only recognized when punished or yelled at, they will seek this form of "being loved." If there is someone close to you who seems to delight in getting you angry, perhaps it is the only way they have to get you to focus your attention on them. Some possible for suggestions using more posit ive forms of teaching responsibility or showing love arc: 1. First, interrupt your current pattern. That is, instead of getting angry; laugh, tease, anything to interrupt the pattern and get the individual's attention. 2. Openly praise them and tell them you love and care for them. 3. Establish rules whereby all individuals involved arc aware of what is expected of them, (rules should be flexible.) 4. Be willing to change your pattern and give more love, praise and consideration to your loved ones. R. Y. Moody, Mental Health Clinic Robinson accompanied his sister, Louise, and her husband. Sam Neff, of Sandy, on an eight-datrip. They visited for a while in Mesquite with another sister and her husband, Ruth and Seth Chamberlin, who were returning to their home in Salt Lake C'itv after having spent the winter in Blvthc, Calif. The Neffs and Robinsons then traveled on to see many places of interest, some of which took them to southern Arizona right on the border of Old Mexico. Kit and from Bo tula Herd Health Last week the three stages and time limits of a normal parturi tion were covered. A few of the common problems associated with stages 1 and 3 were discussed. This week the second stage and some of the encountered problems will be covered. Stage two is the most critical in the delivery of a live calf. There are some guidelines to follow in the correction of any dystocia which means difficult birth. (1) Check any cow that hasn't delivered a calf within 1 hour after the water bag breaks. (2) Restrain the cow by tying her up in an area where you will have room to work. (3) Tie the tail with a piece of twine up around the cows neck. (4) Wash the back of the cow with a mild soap to prevent carrying manure into the uterus. (5) USE A LOT OF LUBRICATION. Ivory flakes or a bar of Ivory soap melted in a bucket of water works well. When we go into a cow-- ' we first need to determine how the calf is coming. Most of the time the calf will be presenting normally but the cow has given up. In order for a calf to pass through the birth canal the head and legs must come simul taneously. The first thing to be determined if the calfs legs and head arc is presenting right whether or not the birth canal is large enough. Only very few cows will be too small but heifers are quite often too small. Measure the birth canal by repelling the calf back into the body cavity. Pull the head into the pelvis cavity by inserting your fingers into the eye sockets and exerting traction. If you can then pull both legs into the birth canal along with the head then she is big enough. If you cant pull the legs into the canal then she is too small and calf the by pulling damage to the cow and death of the fetus will A cescarean result. section should be done as soon as possible. Most of the time we can apply traction manually or with a calf puller to deliver the calf. In a natural delivery of a calf the cow expclls the fetus slowly through the birth canal to allow her to dilate as the calf passes. Once the head pops out she strains to vigorously expell it the rest of the way out. Very often when the calf comes out to its chest, the cow will rise and the calf will fall down Bart, and grandfather, Joseph. Brian and I.aNila also have a little son. Colby. Dale and Fern, enjoved having Alden and and forward between the cow's back tegs. This arcing movement helps to elevate the calf s hips so they will pass through the widest part of the cow's pelvis which is the upper part. When you use the puller try to follow the same pattern. Pull slowly until the head pops out and use lots of lubrication. Allow the cow time to dilate as you pull so she wont rip and tare. After the head pops out then pull rapidly until the chest appears. At this point pull the calf down between the cows back legs to prevent hip lock. If the calf does hip lock release the pressure on the calf puller. Before trying to relieve the hip lock make sure the calf is in good shape and breathing. In delivering a backward calf a little more speed must be employed so the umbilical cord isnt torn in two and the calf sullocates. Remember after 1 hour examine the cow and assist as needed. Use plenty of lubrication and apply traction in the correct way so as to prevent injury to the cow and the calf. Next a discussion on specific types of dystocias and their correction.
