Show Body Jane, John, Rita and I spent the weekend in Price attending the annual Utah Press Association Summer Convention. It was hosted by Bob and Isobel Finney of the SUN ADVOCATE and members of their staff. Kirby Kirkman of Mountain Fuel, long time friend and assiciate member of the UPA also 'gave Finney assistance. Kirbys wife Zel is a sister to Laveda Bishop and Reva Skidmore. We departed Delta early Friday morning as I was supposed to be in Price at noon for a board meeting. 1 plotted our course very carefully (sort of carefully it turned out). Price isnt too far away as the crow flies but mighty far if you stay on the main roads so I planned a few shortcuts. Things went very well until just beyond Fairview when we encountered the dirt road. Actually dirt road is a bit flattering, it was more like a seldom used trail. What a trip. I had Rita so on edge she quit gasping. She is a terrible back seat gasper, drives me nuts. However, one must always look to the bright side, which we were hard pressed to do on that trip, but we did find Electra Lake (a newly formed lake just bustling with fishermen) which really wasnt were and we saw a beautiful buck deer with his horns in the identified goat cheese, Greek olives, rolls, delicious rice, lamb and a very tasty mixture wrapped in grape leaves. Then there was desert. Fantastic pastries heavily laced with honey. I just stuffed myself. After the meal Miss Carbon County, a very lovely girl who works for Bob and Isobel at the paper entertained us with a belly dance. Sunday had to let Rita swim herself blue in the motel pool before we could come home. She has missed swimming this sorely summer and she just went wild when she saw the pool. I took a different route home and the ride over the mountain was beautiful. John took his bicycle and rode part way home. We picked him up on the way. He said he enjoyed the bicycling but it was just too lonely to ride by himself. I came home and just collapsed on the couch. I did make it up in time to go to bed. I have got to get rested up this week as I dont plan to miss a thing at the Millard County Fair and Rodeo this weekend. The body found last Sunday 30 miles south of Fillmore on a Ranch Exit of has been identified as Wilbor Devor Pedersen, 57, of Gardina, California. Pedersens wife, Luella, made a positive identification over the telephone from his clothing, contents of his suitcase, and an injury to one of his toes that had been suffered in a 1 previous accident. His identity was discovered when a wallet containing nothing but an old draft card was discovered at the scene of an accident on August 7th involving a semi-truc- k trailer 5 miles north of where the body was found near Kanosh on A passerby at the accident scene found the wallet on the highway and handed it to Investigating Officer Lyle Evans of the Utah Highway Patrol. Investigation was made, Mrs. Pedersen located and questioned, and she confirmed the identification. Pedersen had left home following a family argument and it was speculated he was on his way to Salt Lake City or Park City w here he had relatives. Sheriff Bryant Crosland and 15 members of the Millard County Jeep Posse searched the area where the wallet was found for miles in both directions and subsequently found several more cards from Pedersens wallet that had been discarded along the way. Pedersen had left home with $28.00 but the cash and his credit cards were missing from the wallet. Pedersens car has not been located and the search for it continues. Relatives arrived August 9 to claim the body. Dave Bradford, Director of the Utah Liquor and Narcotics Enforcement, and Pete Hayward, Homicide Investigator for the Salt Lake Sheriffs Office have been exceptionally helpful in this investigation. The homicide is still under investigation. WEATHER REPORT lost-w- e velvet. Well I missed board meeting so we moved right on to the next event which was a shooting contest under the direction of Kirby. a golf tourney was scheduled but the golf course had been flooded and Price doesnt have enough water to reseed right now. Being the good sport I am, I participated in the shooting contest. I figured everyone needed a good laugh when I missed the targets entirely. Well no one was more surprised than I when I won the ladys division. I really shined in the pistol competition. I scored 118 out of 120. And at this point I must mention that I danced the Polka with the Mayor of Price, Walt Axelgard. The next morning we had to bustle early for a trip to Huntington to tour the Huntington Power plant. It was just a very impressive bit overwhelming for me as I am not even sure I understand AC vs DC. The coal for the Huntington plant is transported by conveyor belt from the mine down the canyon to the plant. Other facts and figures mind. escape my untcchnical Lunch was prepared for us in the canyon by the Carbon County Jeep Posse. From there the group we were with went to the Deer Creek Coal mine for a tour. By the time we got on all the paraphernalia (boots, coveralls, hard hat, safety glasses. light and battery, and a survival something or other) required to go underground I thought I would need a crane to lift me into the electric car. We went 2 miles back into the mountain and then moved around on foot to sec how they work at the face of the mine. They explained all about the ventilation systems and how a mine is worked. This particular mine is in the advance stage so thay arc cutting 8 foot strips with a big machine that chews the face, gathers the coal which is dumped into buckets and then it is loaded on a conveyor belt to the outside. THc belt they are now using is 42 inches and not doing an adequate job so they are going to change it to 48. When they reach the end of the coal veins they will retreat and recover all the remaining coal by a method they described as room and pillar. It was a fascinating tour. I it find didnt particularly even though the low frightening ceilings made me uncomfortable but I did find it cold. THcy told us it w as about 60 to 70 degrees underground but in the areas where the intake air was coming in I could see my breath. The evening event was a Greek buffet prepared by the ladies of the Greek Orthodox Church in Price. Talk about delicious. According to conservation officer Brent Olson, "The fish planted in Corn Creek and Chalk Creek were orginally scheduled for stocking in other streams but were stocked in Millard County due to insufficient stream flow in the originally scheduled streams. Although Corn and Chalk Creeks should have excellent fishing, Pioneer Creek, Meadow Creek and Oak Creek should be rated as poor. The latter three streams have not been planted recently and will not receive more fish this any year.
