Quarnberg. for Many, many own." That spoken message was given bv Barboncito. Navajo Chief in May of 1868. Sue recently gave me a copy of the Navajo Treaty and it is really interesting. Chief Barboncito of the Navajo and General W.T. Sherman of the Army played a major role in the signing of this treaty. However, the following chiefs also played an role: Delgadito. Manouclito, Largo. Hcrrero Armijo and Torivio. The booklet also gives some historical background. You see the Navajos were removed from their fatherland in 1863 by Colonel Kit Carson representing the government. could The Navajos harldy survive in their new surroundings. Crops little would not grow, for their grazing sheep and other livestock, and they the Navajos were just plain unhappy. It was then that General Sherman began to meet with the Indians and discuss some possibilities for a treaty and land that they might occupy. The Navajos just wished to return to their homeland and continue to be peaceful people raising corn and sheep. Barboncito summed it up in these words After we get back to our country it will brighten up again and the Navajos will be as happy as the land, black clouds will rise and there wiH be plenty of rain. Corn will grow in abundance and everything look happy. Bin know again. Ihinking we won, we were the only loosers. The aw ful tradgedy loosers. The awful tragedy keeps welling up in your hollow throat and chest. A friend dies, or a president is shot. A river is throttled. My mouth is stale and my heart is under my soles. I glare at the ground and spit bitterly for davs. Now little Eden is 200 feet underwater. The treaty was signed and the Navajos returned to their homeland which they still occupy today. The expressions of concern and friendship portrayed by the many cards, flowers, notes of sympathy, food, and services contributed much to our comfort and solace. We greatly appreciate the services of the councilmen, the firemen, the local police, and those who participated in the services.
