Slowly and surely we are allowing many of our historic treasures to crumble away and with this crumbling goes the loss of National pride. If we are to leave the historians some trace of what type of people we were, we must start now for a concentrated effort of preservation. Slowly local, state and national historic wonders are being torn down, we are becoming a nation of glass and steel. We do this in the name of a modern society and a society that seemingly will sacrifice anything for progress. Of course we can continue for at least another 200 years and there will be a little something left, but not much, the rubble heap will be glass and steel and the natural wonders will be worked out with dams, oil fields, man made lakes and many other things. Here in Utah we have a golden opportunity to still become a leauer in m luinu historic preservation, we live on the last frontier, we have two choices, we can continue to our landscape with power lines running to the northwest, we can continue to build dams so that Los Angeles can have water, we can continue to build highways that tear apart scenery so that everyone can pass quickly through Utah to get to Las Vegas. The other choice we can tighten the old belt and start taking a hard line attitude. I know, will the kilowatt hour at a lake and dont see an aqueduct at a marsh and dont see more rotting surplus I look wheat at a beautiful gorge I look and I look dont see a damsite. at a meadow and dont see real estate. at a graceful bird in the sky and dont see a feathery hat factory. I look at an old stately building and dont see monument another erected of glass and steel I look at an old home and I dont see age, I see warmth and beauty." I look Yes my cry is that of a mourner, one who mourns when we tear down a historic old building that still has alot of years left. Yes one who mourns when we build a power line and it is an eyesore when we could build it elsewhere. Yes, I mourn when I see another poree filled for another lake, Yes, I mourn when one more unsightly oil well is drilled near a scenic location giving Union oil a few more millions, and the oil is really not needed. We must measure the values, would it be Letter to mine a few rocks and destroy a natural attraction that could lead to a National Monument? Some of these took all the eons of time to create, but vet we are willing to destroy them, for what, Progress, Peace, Love, War, Hope.
