Show SALT FLAT NEWS, SPRING 10 - SUMMER, 1973 WATER LEVELS GREAT SALT LAKE Special to the News 4,201 SYRACUSE -- Water level of the southern part of the Great Salt Lake (south of Southern Pacific causeway) was listed at 4200.55 feet Monday, May 14 according to Ted Arnow, district chief of water resources, U.S. Geological Survey. He said the south part of the lake is considerably higher than the northern part because 95 percent of the Inflow (from Bear, Jordan and Weber Rivers) comes into the south end. Readings are taken twice a month from instruments located at the old Salt Lake County Boat Harbor. The present level Is within about a foot of levels recorded in 1847, 1861, 1908, 1930 and 1952. The only thing that we can be sure of Is that the lake fluctuates, Arnow said. In 1873, the lake reached an high for the time In which records have been kept (since 1847), with a level of 4,212 feet. Then, in 1905, the level went down to 4,196, the record low up to that date. In 1924, it was back up to 4,205, but it dropped to 4,194 in 1935, went back to 4,201 In 1952 and reached an low in October, 1963, of 4,191.35 feet. Since then, the level has gradually risen, according to climatic fluctuations. If the weather is cold, there is less evaporation from the lakes surface, so the lake level rises. Last winter was unusually cold, so the rate of evaporation slowed, Arnow explained. Right now, if the sun should stay out and if the weather should remain warm, the evaporation rate would be greater than the inflow from water from the melting snowpatk, and the lake level would go down, he said. The lake level traditionally goes down after July 1 during long hot summer days. all-tim- e 4,200 4,199 4,198 Arnow said the U.S. Geologiman came to Utah. cal Survey Is currently engaged The lake level would have in a study with the Water Re- been about five feet higher if sources Division, in which inflow there had been no diversions for and evaporation are measured at irrigation, industrial and culinary various points in the lake. use," Arnow said.
