Right now, the length of the boys’ hair is underfire, bringing the King Family ‘nto line with millions of other not-so famousfamilies Whoare the people in the King Family? Are they all alike? What holds them together? To get some answers, I went to watch them taping a television show—andranright into a “King”named Ric De Azevedo. “I'm about to tap dance on yourfingers.” warned Ric, his eyes laughing. Hands.me Ric is Alyce King’s 24-year-old son. With some King Cousins, he was going to sing and dance on a table at which I sat. Ric is full of fun, friendly, outgoing. He switches quickly from serious concentration to lighthearted banter, and has a knack for relaxing people. Heis, maybe, the King Family’s top candidate for individual stardom. “It’s downhill all the way from now on!” he declares at 9:30 a.m. on a day that started for him at 4 a.m,“It’s like being in the Army again.” He moves jerkily, to convey the impression of a robot. “Sometimes I do feel as if I'm losing myidentity, Butreally I love it— loveit and hateit! Young and unattached, Ric has an eye for Ric and Cathy: “You walk a fine line between business and family—and the family usually wins out.” ofidentical personalities. It isn’t. Cathy Cole Green for example, is vastly different from Ric. Sheis a little tense and very shy. With her the girls. “I’m looking for the earthy, mother long, blonde hair, blue eyes and generously type. I'm & good cook. It’s hard to find a girl these days wino can cookbetter than I can. Andit would be greatif she really dug music. proportioned figure, she is striking indeed. She hasa voice to maich. Yet she lacks the self-assurance of cousin Ric. “I'm so nervous when I have a solo. I’m more comfortable singing before thousands of strangers than the family,” she admits. “They're myrelatives, and I want their approval.” She gives me one of her shy, lovely smiles, “I’m taking singing lessons now, so I guess I’m serious abouta career.” Cathy relaxed and came alive when she spoke of her marriage to television executive Jim Green. “Show-business marriages can be difficult when both partners are in the same field. In our case, there’s no competition because I’m a singer, and he’s in producticn.” When I complimented heron hersinging, she looked doubtful. “I want to prove myself,” she had told me. “I'm a perfectionist.” She is determined to give her best—except that, by her standards, her best is never good enough. Ric, on the other hand, has a sense of humor big enough to overcome most obstacles. But he is less patient than Cathy. “I hate to keep rehearsing something I know well because someoneelse gets it wrong. And I don’t really care for some of the family numbers.” Does he ever refuse to do something he doesn't like? This was probably the only time I saw Ric frown. “Of course not! You can’t do that! You walk a fine line between business and family But I'm not ready for marriage. I couldn’t take on the responsibility until I am more sure of where mycareeris going.” Now Ricis more serious. “I'd like to make records andsing alone. I love this business.” Behind the clowning, Ric really does want to be a star. Heis a real proin front of the TV cameras. And his charm remains intact. He has a built-in public relationsinstinct that allows him to be gracious under pressure. “I room with John and Ray,”hetells me. “And they're the people I'd choose to spend mytime with anyway. Wehavea lot of laughs. Onetime the family stopped for a snack, and we made bets on how muchit would cost. You know,it came to $112!” Family disagreementisn’t unheard of. Right now, the length of the boys’ hair is underfire, bringing the King Family intoline with millions of other not-so-famous families. “I can’t understand that,” says Ric. “How can a womanwith short, cropped hair complain aboutourlong hair? That bugs me.” He wastalking about Yvonne King, his aunt. Business decisions are taken seriously. Everyone sits in on production meetings, makes suggestions and shares the responsibility. “We take a vote on everything,” says Ric. “And it works outpretty well.” Because of their muchpublicizedcloseness, it’s easy to think the King Family is composed ‘BOX 10839, HOUSTON,TEX. 77018 | “4 Family Weekly, October 8, 1971 —andthe family usually winsout.” And that, I think, saysit all. o |
