When the ships reached America, tho sealed orders of the Virginia Company of London were opened. The orders appointed Smith to the colony’s governing council. Smith was notallowed to serve at first, so he went on an exploring expedition and was captured by Indians. He later reported that he was aboutto be killed but was saved by Pocahontas, the chief's daughter. Later, Smith became the leader of the colony.
