By MURRAY OLDERMAN : : : : : : : BOSTON — (NEA) — is the time of year when professional basketball teams put their futures on the line. They gamble on the draft of college players, and one or two mistakes can set them back years. Arnold (Red) Auerbach, the general manager of the Boston Celtics, probably has been the mostastut judge of embryonic talent in the modern game. And now he’s aboutto impart the wisdom of his judgment. “There are certain things about scouting I don’t believe in,”he begins. “‘I don’t believe in computers, and I don’t believe in cooperative scouting. Baltimore lost the first two games of the 1970 playoffs to New York and then battled to a 33 tie before bowing to the Knicks in the seventh game. Last year’s Bullets, however, packed power and almost stalled the New York champion express, Sunday afternoon’s nationallytelevised contest is a continued story of Baltimore's walking wounded. Gus Joinson will disappoint the home fans by remaining idle for the third straight game. Earl Monroe, who usually is bothered by bum knees, now has an ankle ailmentto hamper his mobility. Kevin Loughery hadto stay off his right heel after Friday's second game loss to New York because the pain was too severe to sustain pressure. So where does that leave Baltimore in the Bullets’ third straight attempt to defeat New Yorkin a playoff series? “Not in too good a position,” admits coach Gene Shue. “But why should we be pessimistic? I still think we can come back and win this series, We almost did it last year.” New York's only worry y is the status of Willis The Stars’ guards, Glen Combs and Merv Jackson, averaged 20.3 and 13.8, respectively, on the year. season.
