She didn’t win the job, but Forster captivated the agents, who soon got him his first professional acting job—a prized Broadway starring role opposite Arlene Francis in “Mrs. Dally.” Uo RSI Te Tha $7 HANGING FLORAL GARDEN Jarger thanthis entire page! it actually seems alive! Meanwhile, he had decided to marry June, his girl friend in Rochester. “I remember proposing to her,” he says, “because it was the second time in my life I made a joke. She said yes, she’d marry me—but when? I said —‘How about 11 tomorrow morning?’ Well, anyway we got married, although her father wasn't keenat first because, well, half-teacher half-actor didn’t seem to make muchof a whole.” “Mrs. Dally” had a short Broadway run, butit led to a long-term contract for Forster with 20th Century-Fox. June and he traveled to Hollywood on their honeymoon and found the studio had noroles for him. “Some actors say they would die without work,” he says. “Not me. I’d rather not work than do junk. “Anyway, I had important work to do. I went back to Rochester and started teaching again until I filmed ‘Re“ections in a Golden Eye.’ “When that was finished, I went back to Rochester to teach. June and I like Rochester best. Our families and friends are there—Istill play ball with the neighborhood team, and besides, I can always pick up money teaching. Of course, the way acting offers are coming in now, T'll eventually have to give up teaching. That’s too bad.” With the offers may comethe first career. conflicts in Forster’s unique split life. “Movie-makers don't realize the influence they have on kids—mostly bad these days. Why, you know, until ‘Blackboard Jungle’ no kids addressed teachers as ‘Hey, Teach’ or got into classroom rough stuff. But they saw the picture and school disciplineall over the country was undermined. I want to work as an actor, but I won't be responsible for anything like that.” This is a strange statement for Forster, costar in “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” which deals with adultery— and features Forster in a nude scene. He admits he hasn't resolved the conflict himself, but if past history is any indication, he will muddle through, finding a standard he can work andlive by. Forster sees this summer as his final period of teaching. But as he discusses his future, you wonder whether he ever will divorce himself from either of the two professions which he seems to have stumbled into accidentally. He says: “Yes, I'm doing ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ with Julie Harris this summer. It’s going to be a great experience for me. I~don’t know, though,” he adds hesitantly. “There's a new summer YMCA program now open in Rochester, and a lot of poor kids are being given free memberships in it. “T've told the ‘Y’ director I want to work in that pro; ; gram,It’s something you can really do things in.
