Show it nas mas indeed an inspiring audience greeted ills his excellency governor spry at the tabernacle last friday evening at tile the public reception which had been arranged as a closing to the farmers and housekeepers school the building was nas packed from rostrum to vestry and from gallery to auditorium with a patriotic and freedom loving audience which was dem castrated cast oust rated by the bursts of applause which bich greeted the cites guest when lie was introduced and also which punctuated his remarks the meeting was one half hour late in commencing according to tile the an time on account of governor spry and his party coming up on the cache valley train instead of earlier in the afternoon as was first intended tile governor were his estimable wife sirs spry and editor leroy armsttong Arms tiong ot of the herald re publican and before tile the meeting they were entertained at dinner at the home of bishop and sirs lorenzo N I 1 stohl and the meeting was postponed one halt half hour for the purpose of giving the guests time to partake of dinner mayor blackburn was master ot of ceremonies and the first number on oil the lie program was the anthem let the mountains shout for joy 11 sung sting by the tabernacle choir prayer was tottered by lion hon john D peters after which a double quartette from the li high il school rendered a number very pleasingly sirs airs A L neff then gave a reading in tier her matchless way after which mrs airs lottie cozier cozien sang the flag without a stain mayor blackburn in introducing governor spry told of tile the visit of governor 11 murray furray to brigham city many years ago and how bow he and A L thomas now postmaster of salt lake city were mistaken for advance agents of a circus and the humorous complications which arose over the ruis misunderstanding r the joke was immensely enjoyed by all inthe inthe building and when the states chief executive arose he was greeted with ringing and sincere applause the remarks of governor spry were taken down especially for the news and are given in full below at the conclusion of the governors speech a quartette composed of A NV ensign isaac 11 II jensen Jeni ien victor b E 11 madsen allsen and C elias jensen sang the old oaken bucket and prof A al merrill of oc the high school made a splendid talk on the effects of the farmers school and boosted hard tor for the high school the closing number was utah the star of the west by the tabernacle tabei nacle choir and pres oleen N stohl pronounced the benediction As the audience filed out governor spry stood at the foot of the sta stairway iray leading down from tile the stand and shook each person by the hand GOVERNORS ADDRESS A mr r chairman ladies and gentlemen I 1 am sure I 1 cannot tell you how much I 1 appreciate this splendid audience tonight I 1 appreciate it for more than one reason for I 1 realize that you are not only come out to pay your respects to myself as an all individual but beyond that you are paying your respects to this great government and it is cl evidence dence of your loyalty patriotism and love of 0 country arid and as your mayor his has said there is really no occasion tor for ne me to question your loyalty and I 1 thank you from tile the bottom ot of my heart when we ne come to talk of the resources of utah I 1 want to say lor for her at the commencement of my remarks that the greatest resource ot of utah Is tier her people the people of this state stale came here originally tor for a purpose and during the last CO 60 deais it has been demonstrated beyond any doubt that there was no mistake in coming liere bere it Is true a majority of p them came here fo for r a religious purpose came ame to make their homes and be free from conditions they had been subjected to back in the middle states and these people laid the foundation here in utah upon which future generations erat ions have built and there has bas never been a question in my find dud but that it was done by those who understood the situation that what they have hare done has been laid deep and broad sufficiently suBi clea ily so that one of 0 the greatest states in ili all the union may be reared upon that foundation and it has been the desire of my heart for many years ever since I 1 have been in a position to act to see to it that so far as my efforts and ability were concerned there should be nothing left undone in bringing about the realization arid and hopes of those men and women who came here in fit the late and early Ws and those of them who are left today may not feel that they put forth their efforts in vain and m what aliat liat Is true of most is true of all the people of utah every one of us lias has been striving ever since we came here to see to it that we apply our efforts in the great development that has been going on that we should stand shoulder to shoulder that community should stand with community in the accomplishment of the giedt work our pioneers commenced and it Is with great pleasure that I 1 meet many of them today and that they can see to this extent tile the realization of their hopes I 1 want to see the boys and girls and oung men and young women of utah contribute in every possible way to tile the furtherance of the hopes and ambitions of their fathers and mothers and as I 1 have sald said many times I 1 say tt it again tonight I 1 dont think it right for sons and daughters to leave their homes and contribute their brain and brawn brav n to the development of other states I 1 consider it ft their duty aside from all else to contribute these to the building up of their home state it if we had done that in the past utah would have had the population she has today there would have hare been very many more communities many more avenues through which a living could have been secured and we would have been very much more prosperous than we are today I 1 dont like the idea of our families separating I 1 believe that our fathers and moth mothers ers after they have borne tile the heat of 0 the day are entitled to the care and attention of their children and I 1 dont like to see the old men and old women of the state left perfectly childless in fit their old age because of the fact that their children have gone off into other states and left them alone I 1 dont mean to say by that that every boy and girl should live upon the old homestead but I 1 do say to them that they should cast about them for homes in near localities so they are always in a position to drop in on the old folks to cheer them in ili their declining years I 1 think it is right or at least in concurrence with my idea of things I 1 hope the time will come ab when nb en they will not be looking about in other communities for places to build their homes because of 0 the tact fact that there are so many opportunities right in or near their localities without looking elsewhere I 1 know there is a desire on the part of our boises and cattle when we turn them in the fields to teach leach through or over the fence as they think it better picking on tile the other side hide it title I 1 want to say to the young of today bhele there was one opportunity when I 1 was young there lie dozens today and there is no reason for us to take our belongings and go off into other communities muni ties doubtless during the week the professor L A il enill has given you talks in regard to the numerous opportunities that are going to waste aste and the remarks were no doubt good lor for you I 1 dont want you to think I 1 am going over ground that has already been thoroughly worked the information presented being the best the state of utah has to offer today I 1 am a believer in the farm I 1 have done some at it as they say I 1 believe lieve it is the most independent life and most profitable employment when you take all things into consideration that a man can follow in utah I 1 know every man does not make a success of it even as ayery man going into the mercantile business does not make a success of it but the rule Is that hat the man who does ills his work right the man that has method connected with ith his work is usually making a success of what he undertakes to do look at john craner also willard hansen who have both made a success of the sheep business because they have followed the same methods as though they were in any line of business and their success speaks for itself and it is so with farming the man who will till ills soil properly the man who will husband his strength is the man who is making a success of farming and I 1 want to say to you good people who are devoting ourselves oui selves exclusively to that kind of it if you will take into consideration the value of the products of your farm though they be large or small or in other words if you should go 90 to a city and ana try to purchase with cash what you are producing on the farm farin you would find it would take more than a 75 salary in ili salt lake city tor for your sustenance and what you produce would be fresh your meat that you slaughter would not lot be like the meat we buy over the butchers counters and our butter would not be such as we are buying bryin 0 in salt lake city since butter reminds me of a story ot of general scofield who with a party of friends was out on the road and they stopped lor for lunch at an inn As lie he partook of the butter he instantly remarked to his friend 1 I 1 hold the rank of lieutenant general in the U S army but ill be damned it if this butter dont me whichever way we turn this is the kind ot of butter we get in salt lake you get everything you need upon the farm I 1 dont know of anything you need that you cannot get it if it Is dry goods or groceries you want you can take butter and eggs to the store and get them you can sell your colts colls and steers or a bunch ot of cattle as john craner is doing all the time it if you give it your attention as lie he does and what you ire are doing liere here in tills this good country is true throughout though out the state there arc are 21 counties in tills this state and whichever life liever one I 1 am in seems the best in talking to a pat baity ty of 0 people from california about a year ago and comparing the products of 0 the soil of utah with the soil ol of california they suggested it might be a good idea to employ me for their chamber of commerce thele as they thought I 1 would be quite a booster lor for them when I 1 told them of the product lieness of our soils so far as our grains and grasses are concerned and abat we are doing in the beet line you know it Is true it would be foly folly to tell of a conversation with W al roylance when lie he went down to provo lie paid 1600 for one acre of peaches I 1 dont need to tell you of this as you are interested in peaches I 1 dont need to 0 o tell you of the orchard he bought how lie he picked 12 boxes of apples from one tree with 96 trees to the acre that means something my friend hansen informs me that in the northern part of the count county Y you have about acres planted to apples you see what a source ot of revenue this will be in a few years down hero here in juab county we have it a gentleman there engaged in the fruit business ile he has different varieties of fruit one particular tract of SO 50 acres he has planted out to peaches cherries and grapes and he be Is supplying the minneapolis market with his fruits and he is authority for the statement himself that alter after spraying pruning cultivating picking and packing off that 50 acres of land lie netted or very much better than to the acre now I 1 presume there are men here in this audience who are in the fruit business that can verity verify this statement because ou on are duplicating that very thing right here in rox box elder county I 1 dont know of any county better situated in the state tor for the growing of fruit than ou on have the great trouble with ou is that you enough land you gone far enough to the south or north as the land on either side of you Is just as good and productive as any you are cultivating today it took a party of fruit glowers from colorado to show the people of utah county the value of their land and they did so by selling their property in colorado for 2000 per acre coming coining down to the provo prove bench beach and buying land of our own people lor for per acre they commenced to plant it to trees and show the people how it was done and this is making the land today just as valuable as that sold in the other state our folks are gradually getting on to the idea and are making a great deal of money As a result I 1 told our down in salt lake city I 1 thought it a good idea to quit politics and go to raising fruit for the pi purpose of s saving money the people who nho are doing that of thing are much better off than the men who sit behind desks or the men who write editorials lor for newspapers and it Is only a question of a short time until our editors will be raising fruit what is true trite of one county Is true trite of another they themay not be able to produce in cache county what you are producing here but they are raising plenty of 0 apples and the people are prosperous and happy congressman howell was telling me that during the time of the recent money stringency when we ne were trying to get hold of money the farmers drew out of the banks in cache county and invested it in things that has never brought them in anything they invested it out of the state some of them are still looking for their dividends if they had taken that and invested it in box elder or utah counties and not in mexico or some other foreign country they would be getting from 25 1 to 13 15 per cent on their investment I 1 can tell front from experience there was that went up tip in smoke ia so to speak and neler neier any return tor for it and that Is one thing our good people of utah want to quit there is an all old adage here in utah that we want to keep ours our lioney there at h home ame and I 1 am in favor of that I 1 have learned by experience as Is evidenced by the certificates of different kinds I 1 have in my possession I 1 told one of my friends tile other day that I 1 was going to fiame them and hang them up on the wall la belled fathers follies so that my children would take warning we ought to keep oil our money at home leorne it is a good thing to establish these home insurance companies tor for which our friend hansen was working at the last legislature I 1 told some of my friends at a banquet in salt lake lahe the other lay day that I 1 was a turn film be believer llever in reciprocity and in view of the fact that the lire fire and life insurance companies are taking so very much money out of the state slate I 1 thought that every man at that banquet should use his influence to get I 1 i the insurance companies to bring led 1 some of that money back to be invest ed in the state there is no no rea reason ou why they should not send some of that money back when iben they are giving it to other states that are not contributing so plentiful as utah butali is they are giang this money to the I 1 i development of other states we have our coal and iron here in it utah I 1 I 1 would like to see them invest it in steel plants for instance I 1 would like to see them go down into it iron on county and put in plants and employ men to make all our railroad iron iron pipe and so forth we could furnish all that construe tural material that is going into buildings in fix salt lake city we could produce all that iron at home if we could get some of the money that la going into the coffers of the other fellow we could do these things and we have it here in utah you can work nork these iron and coal deposits until you are grey and your childrens children children grow grey after you I 1 was down to a coal deposit in carbon county some time since and they had some 1280 acres of laud land aud and they have made an all estimate that that body of |
