The National Association of Realtors GRI, CRS and the Utah Association —Bethed UsAsvere of Realtors are committed to making the face of home ownership in America “look more like America.” The organizations are dedicated to increasing homeownership, especially among minorities and lowand moderate-income families the groups that homeownership often eludes the most. There is a gap in homeownership rates between minority households and white households. While more than 70percent of white households own their homes, less than 50 percent of African American and Hispanic households own their home, according to research from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. According to the 2000 Census, the largest minority groups in Utah are Hispanics, which make up seven percent of the population, and Asian and Pacific gees §=|slanders, which make up three percent of population, the Nationally, homeownership by His- panic households in 2002 was at 49.5 percent. The homeownership rate for Asian, Native American, and Pacific Islanders was at 55.4 percent. While these numbers are up from previous years, they are still significantly lower than statistics from the white segment of the population. More than two-thirds of the new households created in the next 10 years will be minority or immigrant households. The buying powerofall minorities is more than $1.3 trillion. That buying power is increasing at a rate faster than either the increase in minority population or the overall buying powerofthe nation. NAR’s Housing Opportunity Program focuses on existing and newactivities at all levels to improve our nation’s housing, increase affordability, and expand opportunities for minorities, persons with disability, seniors, and newhouseholds. The NAR advocates policies that address real estate issues in minority communities, and promotes and celebrates the leadership and professionalism of minorities in real estate. Realtors reach out to minority populations by completing NAR’s award winning At Home with Diversity program. The curriculum is designed to educate real estate licensees to effectively reach out to all racial and ethnic groupsin their communities. A key benefit ofthis train- ing is the development of an inclusive marketing plan designed to meet the needs of each participant’s market demographics. For more than 25 years, NAR and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have been actively engagedin the achievement and promotion of fair housing. This collaboration and involvement has successfully helped elevate the importance of open and free housing across the nation. Realtors in Utah recognize the importance of making homeownershipareality for everyone, regardless ofdifferences in nationality.
