Show Tuesday, November18, 2003 THe ASSOciaATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA Cuttino Mobley scored 19 points, and Yao Ming and Jim Jackson each added 12 to lead the Houston Rockets to a 74-66 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night. The Rockets, who won for the seventh time in nine games, took a lead late in the first quarter and never trailed again. They led by as many as 15 in the fourth. The Rockets shot only 33 percent, but the Sixers were even worse at 32 percent. Houston went 9-for-28 from three-point range, whilethe Sixers missed all nine attempts. Allen Iverson scored 15 for the Sixers, who had their lowest point total of the season. They played without starters Derrick Coleman (left knee strain) and Glenn Robinson (left anklestrain). OTHER GAMES: Knicks 89, Celtics 86: Former University of Utah player Michael Doleac scored the Knicks’ final four points and grabbed eight of his nine rebounds while playing the en- tire fourth quarter, helping New York win at home. The win was only the third of the season for the Knicks, whogot 26 points from Allan Houston and 21 from another ex-Ute, Keith Van Horn 13 in the third quarter when the Knicks made up most of a big deficit. Wizards 106, Hawks 97: Jarvis Hayes keyed a fourthquarter run with a go-ahead three-pointer, and Washington snapped a four-game losing streak by winning at Atlanta. Larry Hughes led the Wizards with 26 points, and Gilbert Arenas added 23. Mavericks 105, Trail Blazers 98: Dirk Nowitzki overcame a slow start to ener- gize a third-quarter rally, and Steve Nash hadhisfirst career triple-double to lead Dallas. Nowitzki, who made his first two shots and then went more than 27 minutes without scoring again, finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Nash posted 14 points, 12 as- sists and a career-high 10 rebounds. Rasheed Wallace scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Zach Randolph added 26 points, 19 rebounds and six assists, but it wasn’t enough to keep Portland from falling to 0-4 on theroad. Drugs: Retesting a possibility @ Continued from Bl sure wholegally owns them. But, scientifically, he saw no reason why they couldn’t be retested. International sports governing bodies are making independent decisions on retesting. Track and field and swimming are currently retesting samples collected last summer at their world championships. Soccer has optednotto retest. In Britain, UK Sport, the agency charged with drug testing, has said its stored urine samples may never be retested. Subjecting the samples to a second analysis after they have been cleared may contravene the principle of“double jeopardy”in British law, UK Sport announced. Ethicist Margaret Somerville sees no legal barriers to sports officials ordering retests. “I think they would be negligent if they didn’t,” said Somerville, director of the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill 3s TAYLOR'S SUSPENSION OVER Maurice Taylor's suspension was reduced to six games Monday by the NBA,and the players’ union withdrew its grievance over the pen- alty. Taylor was originally suspended 10 games without pay for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The union contended that the maximum suspension should have been five games. Talks between the league and the union produced the compromise Monday — the same day Taylor's case was to be heard by an arbitrator. Taylor also was suspended by the league for the first five games of the 2002 season for smoking marijuana. He was previously suspended in December 2001 after acknowledging he used marijuana in violation of league rules. MCDYESS TO SCRIMMAGE Antonio McDyess will take the next step in his recovery from a fractured kneecap today when he scrim- mages five-on-five with the New York Knicks. Coach Don Chaney ruled out having McDyess play Wednesday-night against the Lakers, but he did not completely dismiss the possibility that McDyess might be avail- able Friday against Detroit or Saturday against Philadelphia. — The Associated Press University in Montreal. Shealso dismisses the double jeopardy argument. “Double jeopardy means you've been charged, tried and acquitt she said. “These guys have not been charged with anything.” Even if lawyers try to argue that the requirementof taking a test constitutes a charge, and that testing negative is equivalent to acquittal, Somerville won't buy it. If a blood sample from a murder suspect doesn’t matchthe blood at a crime scene, the suspect isn’t off the hook, she said. Similarly, passing a drugtest that is later found to be inadequate doesn’t protect athletes from retesting, she said. “What you’ve got here is people who haveintentionally tried to trick the system. .. and now [we] have the means to see if they have cheated,”she said. Nor is she concerned about the missing Salt Lake samples. Medals potentially could be removed from athletes who flunk a retest because their samplesstill exist, and given to others just as guilty, whose samples were discarded. “T just think that’s the luck of FG PORTUND Min MA MA Wallac Randaph Dawe, Soudemre Wells Minnis Steparsa Woods Carroll Totais 125 4 463 3H 41 912 7-11 1019 6 4 2% 27 12 «68 23 5 «Hl 33 37 7 1 5 26713 00 02 0 1 4 640 00 4 5 7 19 00 1300 2 1203 00 03030 4 o 02007 240 29-68 1521 24-53 22 20 OT A PF PS Goals: 5-15, 333 (Wallace 3-5, Caroll 1-1, Moinnis 1-2, Wells 0-1, Woods 0-1, Stoudamire 0-5).
