After a pair of exhibition victories over outclassed opponents, the University of Utah’s 19th-ranked women’s basketball team opensits regular sea- son tonight against Southeast Missouri State at the Huntsman Center. Tip-off for the first-round gamein the Women’s Preseason NIT is 7 p.m. Utah comes off a 24-7 season, which ended with a 65-54 loss to top-ranked Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Utes return all five starters, including double-figure scorers Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn, and expectations are understandably high. But so is the level of competition, starting with the Preseason WNIT. Southeast Missouri, for example,is the preseason favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference. The Otahkians return four starters from last season, whenthey went 19-11. As openers go, the Utes could have found a softer opponent. “They are very quick,” said + coach Elaine Elliott. “They'll come rightat us, I’m sure.” Four teams ranked in the preseason Top 25 are competing in the 16-team Preseason WNIT, including No.10 Texas Tech, No.16 Rutgers, No. 18 Cal-Santa Barbara and No. 19 Utah. Three other NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago are included in the field — Western Kentucky, Liberty and Cincinnati. Amongthe highly regarded teams, Utah might have the most difficult path to the championship. If the Utes get past Southeast Missouri, which won its two exhibition games by a combined 55 points, they will mostlikely play perennial power UC-Santa Barbara on Mondaynight, probably in California. If Utah reaches the Preseason WNIT semifinals, it could end upfacing Texas Tech or Western Kentucky. If the Utes managed to reach the championship game, Rutgers would be the most likely opponent. Along with Liberty and Cincinnati, the Scarlet Knights look like the team to beat on the side of the bracket thay cepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Sony Open in January, putting her in position to becomethe youngest woman to play ina PGA Tour event.
