Other counties didn’t comeclose. “Tt has been a struggle,” said veterinarian Bruce Gardner, whoruns the Animal Hospital in Council, a one-time sawmill town in central Idaho that saw its population drop to just816. Idaho was thefifth fastest-growing state in the nation overthe past decade at28.5 percent. Its populationlast year was 1.3 million. Policy makers knewof the urban concentration long before the census details were released because ofeconomic problems in rural areas. Gov. Dirk Kempthorne made rural economic development a priority during the legislative population surged in the past decade, from the suburbs of Albuquerque to mountain- studded areas like Taos and Ruidoso, according to census figures released Thursday. Overall, the state’s population grew 20 percent since 1990 to 1.8 million last year. Thebiggest spurt was in the Rio Grande Valley corridorthatbisects the state from the Coloradoline to the Mexican border. The most growth occurred in several counties surrounding Albuquerque, the state’s largest city and engine of the New state with a 64 percent population increase during the past decade, followed by Valencia County and Sandoval County, home to a computer-chip manufacturing plant operated by Intel Corp. The area’s population is expected to double over the next 50 years. Manypeople who work in Albuquerque have chosen to commute,living “far enough awayto enjoya rural lifestyle or less expensive home,”said Brian Sanderoff, who heads an Albuquerque polling and research company. Undocumented Immigrants Can Get Legal by Paying Fine BY SUZANNE GAMBOA THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON— Eligible undocumented immigrants wanting to attain legal resident status by paying a fine and staying in the country must apply for immigrant visas by April 30, officials said Friday. The Immigration and Naturalization Service released official rules for a law signed in December by former President Clinton.
