Show conference under most auspicious circumstances quarterly conference ol of the dor bor elder stake opened in the stake tabernacle saturday morning last at 10 seated on the stand were the stake presidency members of the high council and two of the patriarchs after the meeting begin elders hyrum M smith and joseph W V SIc Murren of the apostles quorum and first counsel of seventy respectively came in having come up lip from salt lake on the morning train the attendance was very good considering the tact fact this Is a busy time of the year and yet the attendance from outlying wards was exceptionally good the conference commenced by the hoir choir and congregation singing the hymn gymn now let us rejoice etc announced by president stohl elder A madsen offered the invocation after which A W ensign and victor E madsen sang the duette the morn ing ng breaks the shadows flee president stohl was the first speak er r and he expressed his pleasure at seeing so many in attendance and also his appreciation of the gospel and the blessings it has brought unto this people thankful for prophets who had laid the foundations of the church deep under the inspiration of the almighty and while he had not become so well acquainted with the predecessors of president smith yet he felt a love and reverence for them and for president smith he be had a most tender regard feeling and knowing that he Is a man who Is deeply concerned in the welfare of the latter day saints spoke of the accomplishments accomplishments of the church in erecting meeting louses and schools in providing tor for he poor and in the spreading of the aspel ospel abr adamont among the nations of the he earth felt good in the payment f his tithes and knew there is a lessl ng atti attached ched to the he for prohibition absolutely and proposes to do all in lis his power to abolish that institution he ha hoped that the people of the various cities and towns of the stake and county who will vote on the matter on the dinst would cast cas their vote to do away with the liquor traffic dishop bishop T 11 II blackburn was called upon lie he reported briefly the condition of the second ward of this city and stated that he was proud of his ward and the good people that reside in it believed that his ward would roll up a big majority for prohibition at the coming election and referred to the black list which the city officials have gotten out which contains the names of a number of men in this community who are addicted to drinking and to whom hom the saloons have been forbidden to sell liquor said it was gotten out for the purpose of doing good to those individuals and their families stated that he be is for prohibition first last and all the time the choir sang the selection count your blessings and elder john D peters of the high council was the next speaker ile he reported the labor of the high council stating that that body was in perfect harmony with the stake presidency and was thoroughly acquainted with the labor of the various wards and the bishops thereof said that the people are generally deficient in example percept creating opportunity for their children ind and suggestions to families from the heads beads of families the farmers and horticulturists are thoroughly familiar with the science of their professions fes fess lons and give their attention to that labor but too little time Is spent in looking after tho the welfare of their families the result being that children are becoming alienated from the confidence of their parents believed that parents do too much in a worldly way tor for their children and do not let them assist in the bearing the responsibilities ties of the home by letting children work tor for them parents will retain the affection and support of their offspring referring to the all important question prohibition elder peters stated that he had been in a position to feel the pulse of the community from a commercial standpoint for a good many years and during all his bis experiences he has failed to see where the liquor traffic aids business generally hoped to see the county go dry Elde rJoseph W was wa the be a great talline falling away of young people from the church tor for tim the reason that they are becoming educated i in the knowledge of the world and the church cannot prosper under modern enlightenment referred to the teachings of brigham young immediately after the pioneers arrived and how the people erected school houses and commenced to educate their children according to statistics the church spends about annually in its schools and in those schools every science and art is taught speaking ot of the word ol of wisdom elder lurren stated that it embodies i all the virtues that are so essential to temperance and a godly life it came direct from god and its wisdom is indeed far reaching the early leaders were e not able ot of their own selves to bring it forth because they were not men tutored in the knowledge of the world but were men of humility whom the spirit of god could operate in perfect harmony said he thanked god that joseph smith was an unlearned man because that tact fact made it impossible tor for him to evolve the wonderful structure of the church of jesus christ which is the wonder of the age he then delivered a strong argument against the saloon showing how absurd is the stand of those who maintain that the liquor traffic Is necessary to the growth and development of a community put a dead man in whiskey and he will keep forever put whiskey exercises pres L A snow made a few remarks relative to the condition of the stake generally and the priesthood quorums particularly he also paid his compliments ments to the saloon expressing the t hope and faith that brigham city would vote dry by a heavy majority on the dinst in this conne connection ebion pres snow thought that some measure should be adopted to give the young men a suitable place to go to after the saloons are closed and he strongly urged the erection of a gymnasium in connection with the library pres W C horsley was the next speaker and heroo he too commented on the work being done in the various wards of the stake commending the bishops for their energy in working for the advancement ot of the kingdom ot of god referring Ke ferring to the coming election pres horsley stated that there Is a certain young man in this city whose name has been placed on the black list who Is reported to have spent 1200 for liquor last year many others spend all the way from 5 and up tip per month for that which destroys their soul and robs their families of the necessities of life assured that the saloon does not aid in making business in a commercial way excepting for the saloon itself and referred to the case of a man in this community who had become a drunkard and whose family was cared tor for by the neighbors and the ward that man finally took the keeley cure and then tie he spent his money with the merchants buying clothing and fee food d for ills his family this kept up for a season and the man went back to drinking agal again n with the result that the merchants do not get his money now it all goes to the saloons and his poor family has to be looked after by friends arid and the church elder hyrum M smith congratulated the people of brigham city on the splendid growth which the city Is making and the beautiful improver improve ments in the homes and surroundings of the people residing here was glad to know that the latter day saints in population and hoped that they would not let go eo ot of their holdings nor let the gentiles come in arid and outnumber them in population unless that class of people were willing to redeem the waste places as the saints have done and assist to buflo build up th the e country believed that the saints are poor in spirit it if they do not recognize the right ot of the leaders to advise them in temporal as well as spiritual matters and he advised them to keep out tho the gentiles with all his abominations tor for the salvation of the sons and daughters of zion is of lar far more worth than the wealth ot of the world referred to the saints living in canada where the outsider has not yet come in any great numbers those communities are the best in the whole church in the observance ot of the laws ot of the gospel and the people are redeeming the waste places and building g up commonwealths that are the pride ol of bial I 1 ial cator referred to tho the condition of those who sell such a man will make a good citizen but keep out the speculator and individual who will introduce the vices ot of the world in the community and keep the lands that have been worked so hard for elder joseph W was the concluding speaker he began by saying that the saints should not lose sight of the fact that they have not bad their feet planted in these vallies for the purpose of becoming wealthy and yet there are very few among us who are not comfortably housed and clothed the promise has been given that by seeking the kingdom of god and its righteousness all else will be continued on page conference the tabernacle wai was filled in the galleries and south side ot of the auditorium with bright rosy faced children of the sunday schools of brigham the balance of the building including the vestry was filled with visitors from out ot of town and parents of the sunday school children on the stand were seated president joseph F smith elder hyrum 11 smith of the apostles quorum and presiding bishop C W nibley all of whom came to brigham on the morning train As the people filed into the building organist john brook rendered some beautiful selections and at the hour of opening supt bupt J D call announced the hymn we ve thank thee 0 god for a prophet which all joined in singing after which elder C N christensen Chrls offered the invocation the schools then the hymn arise sang beyond the gates of paradise and organist john brook rendered some instrumental selections clinton lillywhite gave a biographical sketch of to life of brigham young A class exercise was given from the fourth ward sunday school after which george A anderson andersen related the history of the hymn come come ye saints the schools joined in singing the hymn anderest and president smith was introduced to the tittle little folks ile he commented on the sentiment of the hymn just sung and then recalled the scenes under which it was composed lie ile called tor for a showing of those present who were present in nauvoo in the winter of ag when ihen the saints were driven from their homes across the ice into the wilderness eight persons stood upon their feet president smith stated he was there though but a lad between seven and eight years of 0 age but he remembered vividly those hardships and recalls plainly how he felt as he stood upon tile tho east bank of 0 the river and watched the first company leave which included brigham young the twelve apostles many of the saints among w whom hom were his own brother and the thing in his mind was wae will we ever see them again ile he then related how ills his mother had taken her family with their provisions clothing and bedding leaving all else in their home and were taken across the river to make their camp on the opposite side of the river with neither tent nor wagon cover nothing over them but the leanes of a big tree and the clear blue sky and how while there just about a mile from their beloved city they were compelled to witness the pillaging of the town by the mob and expecting every moment that a cannon ball would explode in their midst and kill hill them all also related the incidents connected with the journey from that to winter quarters where the balance of the saints were located and the suffering endured there told experiences ho ie had as a herd boy and how the indians nearly captured him upon one occasion also how he drove an ox team down to missouri the following year to secure provisions for the journey across the plains ile he walked all the way miles down and back and was barefooted at that and it was bitter cold then he drove a four cattle team across the plains in 1848 all the way to salt lake city never once tipping a wagon over nor never losing one single head of cattle though he was under ten years of 0 age did not speak of these things to boast but simply to tell the children the cold bare truth and he felt thankful that it was all over stated that those scenes would never again be enacted by the saints for the church has grown too big and while many from the outside had endeavored to frighten the church and had succeeded in scaring a few individuals the church would never again be mobbed and persecuted as it had been in closing president Pies ident smith referred to the sacrament and the resurrection of jesus christ bearing a wonderful testimony to that principle the schools sang in our lovely desere and the benediction was need aced by elder J F bowring at ahki session of the conference there were pr present besent 1433 1432 souls sunday 2 P M the tabernacle was filled almost to overflowing there being some over eleven hundred present nearly all ef cf whom were adults after the opening exercises president stohl presented the general and local
