O'Connor, 80, died Wednesday ofa brain tumor. Outside, hundreds of people stood eight to 10 deep ona 91-degree dayto listen to the Mass over loudspeakers. President Clinton headed the long list of dignitaries who attendedthe Massfor O’Connor, who came to New York in 1984 from Scranton, Pa., and was appointed in 1985 as head of the nation’s third-largest archdiocese, with 2.4 million Catholics. Byvirtueofits location in New York, the archdiocese is the most prominent RomanCatholic pulpit in the nation, and O'Connor was a perfect fit in the media capital, serving as Pope John PaulII's most forceful spokesman in America. “He madethis pulpit unique in the historyof the Catholic Church ‘Suzanne Plunkett/The Associated Press From left, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, New York Gov. The pope, through the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, sent his: condolences to O’Connor’s family. Speaking at the start of the service, Sodano — who carried O'Connor's staff into the church — sounded a themeofcelebration ratherthanloss. “Lord, we don’t complain be- draped in white linen. It is the second human chromosome whose DNA has been been fully deciphered. Chromosome 22 was mapped lastfall. “Another volumte has just been placed on the shelf. Now wereally haveto roll up our sleeves and assess what these genes are doing there, what role they play in caus” said Francis Collins, chairman of the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The German- and Japanese-led team that mapped both chromosomes is part of the Human GenomeProject, an international effort to decipher chemically the entire human genetic blueprint. Humans are normally born with 23 different pairs of chromosomes, which are made upof genes. Chromosome21 contains relatively few genes, ae ey are in. a complex tangle. The be published in rhureaay's issue of the journal Nature. The researchers found that chromosome 21 contains far fewer genes than the 545 in chromosome 22, the second-smallest chromo- some. The relative sparseness of genes in chromosome 21 may mean the total number of genes in human DNAis under 40,000 — notthe 100,000 or more that had previously been thought. The map of chromosome 21 is 99.7 percent complete; technical limitations prevented a complete mapping, said David Patterson, an American scientist involved in the yject. Patterson said the map mayallow researchers to homein on specific genes in the chromosomethat cause mental retardationin people with Down syndrome and then perhaps develop drugs to treat suchpatients. Down syndromeoccurs when a personis born with an extra, third copy of chromosome 21. Down syndrome, the most common form of genetically caused mental retardation, occurs in about onein 700 live births. Down syndrome can also cause congenital heart disease and Alzheimer’s by age 40. Rudolph Tanzi, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, said the chromosome map could eventually shed light on why people with Down syndrome have a lowrate of breast, lung and gastrointestinal cancers. It could be that an extra copy of chromosome 21 has _tumor-suppressing qualities. The Human GenomeProject expects to have a rough draft of the entire human genetic blueprint donethis summer. cause you have taken him from us,” Sodano told a hushed crowd inside the cathedral. “But rather wewill thank you for giving him to us.” The Mass opened with a 45minute procession of 1,000 of O’Connor’s fellow clergy.
