Show The Salt Lake Tribune SPORTS Sunday, September19, 1999 C3 Skyline Eagles Not Soaring, ButStill No. 1 BY JAY DREW THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE After the Skyline Eagles shook off two consecutive regular-season losses last year and won their ‘Skyline 20 G4 26 fourth-straight Class 5-A football championship, a couple of rival coaches suggested the Eagles Northridge layin 11 56 30 22128 a Weber 11m a 1p ary Boteler Cottonwood = 0 1 14:17 0 4 e106 ROY should be ranked No.1 this year until they lost a playoff game. Thewaythe 5-A seasonis going, the point may be moot. Although they were tested Friday at Clearfield, needing a fourth-quarter touchdown to win 22-15, Skyline appears on its way to an unde- feated regular season. No other team in weak Region1 (outside of Northridge, perhaps) looks capable of groundingthe Eagles. And Skyline’s lone non-region contest remainingis a UEAspecial at Class 3-A’s Dixie, which is 0-4 andthis week can becomethefirst defending state champion ever to start a season 0-5. What's up with that scheduling, Eagles? Was Copper Hills booked? It probably doesn’t matter. No at he im an to- dle other 5-A team looks powerful enough to seize the top ranking, anyway. Sure, No. 2 Mountain View is 4-0 andis proudofits 30-9 win over Brighton. But that was a Brighton team that was weakenedbyinjury and may not have deserved its ranking, since the Bengals squeaked by 1-3 Davis and 2-2 Bingham. If not for more than 140 penalty yards, Lone Peak probably would have beaten Mountain View. Granger had it going for a while, but a 13-12 overtime win over Kearns just isn't good enough. West Jordan? The Jaguars have a nice story going with new coach Mike Morgan, but they are a couple of plays away from being a 2-2. The positive spin on all this Class 5-A mediocrity is that the state playoffs should be competitive and exciting this year — ALLGAMES Jortan Orem W LPFPA WLPFPA Dis Clare 40117 40 PREP FOOTBALL STANDINGS 01M 2 1a 02m 2 Sp 100 8 194% 1 1 33 22.52 50 Bomevile W.Jordan Bountiful Hunter Bingham Taylorsville Highland Murray Cro Olympus est Riverton Alta 2083 Hillerest 1146 Timp.
