After opening with a 2-overpar 73, Summerhays fadedto a 79 inthe second roundat Santa Ana Golf Course. Poffenberger shot 80-80 and qual ified comfortably. Fromthestarting field of 144, Utah Special Olympians Headed to World Summer Games Utahis sending 44 athletes and 14 coaches to the Special Olympics World Summer Games, starting Saturday in North Carolina. Most Utahns will leave this morning. A sendoff event was staged Wednesday night, featuring Gov. Mike Leavitt. The international multi-sport event is the largestin the world in 1999, as well as the biggest ever in North Carolina history. The 44 Utahns join 7,000 athletes from more than 150 coun: tries to compete in the nineteensport Special Olympics. Another 2,000 coaches, 15,000 family and friends, 35,000 to 40,000 volunteers and 400,000 spectatorsare expected. The Utah contingent will competein nine sports: aquatics, track andfield, bowling, cycling, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, and softball. Opening ceremonies begin on June 26, and feature Billy Crystal as Masterof Ceremonies, along with Shelley Mooney, a gymnast fromBountiful. Special Olympics Spurs also recently announced that Maya Angelou and Stevie Wonder will also perform at the games. “I totally identify with the spirit of Special Olympics Ath- letes and their determination to show the world what they can do,” said Wonder, a 21-time Grammy winner. “It is going to be my joyto performfor them.” Maya Angelou, a renowned in: ternational poet, also will attend the games. “Stevie Wonder and Dr. An- gelou are aninspirationtoall of us as to the powerandpotential wehavewithin us if just given a chance,” said Special Olympics CEO Timothy Shriver. Additional entertainmentwill include performances bySugar Ray, Kirk Franklin, Morgan Heritage and evangelist Rev. Billy Graham. Grant Hi rnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, daughter of Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver, are also expected to attend the opening ceremonies, parts of which will the line to make it a one-point game.
