Show i TODAY: BASEBALL Philadelphia Inquirer_ That 22-1 Game Might Portend Endfor Pitchers We're not sure exactly when youcantellit's no longer safe to pitch fora liying. But it would probably be at a pointlike this: Whenthe Atlanta Braves give up 22 runsin one game, and John Smoltz starts it. Well, friends, pitching armageddonisofficially here, because last Sunday, the Braves and Smoltz really did lose a 22-1 gameto the previ- ously moribund Baltimore Orioles. And if the Atlanta Braves can give up 22 runs in one game, what's next? Pedro Martinez serving up 12 home runs somenight? Randy Johnson going a month withouta strikeout? Greg Madduxhaving a higher ERA than Ryan Dempster? Huh? What's that? Maddux does have a higher ERA than Dempster? Oh. Figures. If the Braves can lose a 22-1 game, anythingis possible, because here's how unbeliev- able that 22-1 game actually was: i The Braves gave up more runs in that game than they gaveupalllast season to two different teams (Pitts- burgh and Arizona). @ They also allowed more ‘runsin this game than they did in the entire 1992, '95 or ‘96 World Series. @ And, most amazing of _all, the Braves now have lost as many gamesby three touchdowns as the Falcons did last season (one). So a weeklater, we'restill asking: Did this gamereally happen, or did we halluci- hate? “No, it happened,” Orioles ‘leadoff wit Brady Anderson said. “At least I'm pretty gure it did.” And he ought to know, be- “eause, in his own words, he observedit firsthand, from the uniqueperspective of >“participating in this game — ‘without actually participating.” That's hard to do norma but Anderson did it — by ‘deciding not to get a hit un til after 24 other hits had fallen.” Yes,by the time hefinally gothis first hit, in the ninth pinning, every other Orioles Starter had had a hit by the Sgeventh.
