Thousandslined the streets of this small town to celebrate the union of the new Earl of Wessex — the title his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, gave him as a wedding gift — and a radiant Miss Rhys-Jones, hereafter to be knownas Her Royal Highnessthe sions or official representatives fromother countries. Edward, at 35 the queen's youngestchild, is a television producer, and his 34-year-old bride a public relations executive. They dated for almost six years before marrying, and both will continue working. In an interview broadcast Saturday, the bridegroom said the couple possessed the cornerstone of a successful marriage, explain- ing that “we happen to love each other, which is the most impor- tant thingofall.” Standing at Edward's side during the ceremony were his two designated “supporters” — the royal equivalent of best man — brothers Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. The entire British royal family attended, including the queen and her husband, Prince Philip; Queen Mother Elizabeth, the bridegroom’s 98-year-old grand- mother; and the sons of Charles and the late Princess Diana, Prince William, 16, and Prince Harry, 14. Hoursbefore the wedding, the queen made her son the Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn — not a duke as some had expected. Edward also eventually will inherit the title of Duke of Edin. burgh, now held by his father.
