Show TODAY:AUTO RACING {theAssociated Press NASCARWill Be Nextto Tether Wheels :| Stock car racing's sanctioning bodyis exploring ways to ent the wheels and hoods ‘Of vehicles from flying off in ‘rashes and possibly landing $n the stands. Safety tethers on wheels have become a hottopic lately in racing because of two fatal accidents in the past year, both of which involved wheels that snappedoff cars and flew into grandstands. killing spectators. All three of the world’s major open-wheelcircuits have enacted rules requiring the use of wheeltethers. Butunlike the open-wheel tethers, which are madeof relatively expensive fibers and can require intricate in- Stallations, the device being eonsidered by NASCAR is easy to install and doesn’t cost much. Thetether is merely a sec- tion of braided steel cable about a foot long and fastened into a loop at each end. NASCARofficials paid $7 for each unit, and because the sanctioning body feels that only the front wheels need to be secured, the cost would be $14 per car. The devices are relatively simple and inexpensive because the suspension systems on Winston Cup cars are radically different from those on open-wheel cars. While Indycar wheels and suspension systems are designed to break free in crashes, the op- posite is true with Winston Cupcars. No spectators have ever been injured by a wheel or suspension parts that flew off a Winston Cup car. Hoods are a different mat- ter, however. They have been known tofly into stands at races, especially those on the circuit's larger tracks where the speeds are highest. NASCARis trying to devel- op a framestructure that wouldstrengthen the hood and makeit less likely to fly off in high-speed crashes. NASCARofficials are con- sidering experimenting with a new hood framedesign this week at Charlotte this week. but only during a test session.
