Show E4 The Salt Lake Tribune SPORTS Friday, January 22, 1999 An All-in-One Wasatch Ski Pass? SCOREBOARD Park City resort managers say the European idea mayyet becomea Utah reality BY KARL CATES THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE PARK CITY — Imagine a border- less ski world in which single pass is ‘good for numerous resorts in the WaSatch Mountains. Historically dismissed as proletari- = pie-in-the-sky, the conceptno longr is ruled out by ski-area managers th Park City, which boasts three ne within five minutesof one oth- mere is certainly a paradigm in Europe,”said Blaise Carrig, managing director of The Canyons. C arguingforone,all-inclusive SummitCoun County ski pass for The Canyons, Park City Mountain Resort and DeerValley Resort, noted thatit’s commonin the Alps and in Northern Europe for ski areas to divvythe pie byselling cross-border admissions. Closerto home, Coloradoalreadyis doing it at Vail, where four resorts are owned by a single company. In Canada, areas with multiple owners have eliminated their borders, most notably around Banff, whichis similar to ParkCity in its proximity to a major metropolitan are Utah's Wasateh Front — in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons — all four resorts this season madehis- Funk in Lead At Hope Classic tory byoffering such a pass to out-ofstaters, a distinction that angered manylocals andraised a clamorfor a multiple-area pass for Utahns, too “It might've been thefirst step, said Eric Thompson, director of winter-sports tourism for the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau, which sold the multi-area tickets to wholesalers. “There is pressure from the consumer,” said Kip Pitou, president of Ski Utah, a nonprofit organization that promotes the industry. Pitou suggestedthata multi-resort pass in Utah could materialize as soon as next season “We're getting closer and closer,” hesaid. “Locals wouldlike the ability to ski one dayat Alta, oneday at Deer Valley.” Such a lift ticket probably would be sold in coupon-book form, muchlike “locals only” deals noware marketed Under those plans, Utahns get entranceto a ski area by buying several days’ worth ofpasses below the usual ofpeople,so you can grow the whole pie and everybody benefits,” said Vern Greco, president and general manager of Park City Mountain Resort. “Combiningterrain of twoor all THEASSOCIATED PRESS In addition to Utahns, international visitors would be drawn to the concept “because that’s the standard they know,” Greco said. A shift towarda multi-resort pass is blocked so far by logistics, to some degree, but mostly by proprietary lines traditionally drawn byresorts in the United States and protected particularly by upscale ones. Cracks are appearingin thatresistance, however. DeerValley, the ritziest Utah resort, never has cheeredthe multi-pass movement. The resort has staunchly limitedits clientele to an elite crowd via pricing (day passes are $57, the highestin the state) and practicesthat keep skier numbers to 5,000 per day and ban snowboarders. But Deer Valley President Bob Wheaton conceded change might be inevitable as the resort expands, “If youwere to ask meis it goingto happen tomorrow or next week, I'd , Probably not,’ Wheatonsaid. “Is it ever going to happen?
