Show 2E4 The Salt Lake Tribune CALENDAR Friday, July 25, 1997 KTKL oa KRKRTry to Make Waves on Radio Scene BY LORI BUTTARS THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE There are two newradio stations floating about the Salt Lake airwaves this week, both bent on chipping away at ratings king KSFI (FM 100.3). KTKL (FM 92.1) and KRKR (FM 107.9) debuted newformats Monday morning. The format switches came just as the spring Abritron ratings report was released. KSFI, with its adult-contemporary format, has been the ratings leader for several years. Adult-contemporary stations, which play a mix of soft rock and pop music, accounted for a 31.4 share of the listening audience age 25-54. KUMT (105.7 FM) madethe biggest jump in the rat- ings since it switched from play- ing adult-alternative artists such as Del Amitri and R.E.M. to adultcontemporary standards by the likes of Chicago and Elton John. Radio operators often tinker with formats this time of year so the changes will be in place by fall, when most advertisers make their annual ad buys. The two newstations appear to be niche-marketed within the z adult-contemporary format. KRKR (FM 107.9) traded in its hard-rock format for an adultcontemporary sound that plays works of artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Harry Connick Jr. The movehasstation managers heraldingit as the only Salt Lake FM station geared to- wardlisteners over 50 “We saw that listeners in that age category were being underserved, particularly on the FM dial,” said Patrick Reedy, general muleast on KOVO (960 AM), which have hadthenostalgia market to themselves for a number of years.
